Where exactly does the vacuum advance port on the distributer connect to?

    Thanks!

the vacuum advance can is silver in color. it is attached to your dist. i am no
expert, but the proper can will advance the dist when the proper amount of
vacuum is produced by the engine. sounds like you are like me. have some one who knows dist. look at your can. chances are it is old and needs replaced. it holds a vacuum and when they get old they will not.

There should be an open vacuum port on the bottom of your carb

Yep, to the bottom of the carb. Or tap into the intake manifold. Either one will work.

There is a vacuum port at the bottom of the carb, on the back- but there is already a hose there that goes to a fitting on the valve cover. Is that correct?

that is your pcv i believe. the port you want is the same diameter as the hose from the dist. follow the line, it will lead to the bottom left front of the
carb. near the manifold. you probably have a old rochester 4gc on that engine. also a afb would be there or on the right front of the carb i think. it is low on the carb almost where it bolts on the manifold. or you could just plug the dist and find a smaller port some where on the manifold. doc can help you there. make sure all vacuum lines are tight and don't leak. it may be a good idea to replace all hoses if that motor has not been taken care of. keep going it will happen jim.

You covered it all, Jim. The only thing that I could add to that is in the past I have seen some tee off of the fitting and line that goes to the vacume modulator in the trans. It is a good source of vacume.
