    Hello,

I was checking out my distributor today and found that the vacuum advance hose is pulling vacuum at idle. Is this normal? Would it cause driveability problems? Where is that hose suppose to connect on a 70 skylark 350-2?

    Thanks,

    Chris

    Chris,

My vacume hose is connected to the carberator, there are two settings on the bottom of the carberator. The hose is above one of the fuel setting screws on the carb.

    Chris,
I believe you should have a ported vacuum source for the advance cannister. You should have a few vacuum nipples on that 2 barrel. One should have full vacuum at idle, the other should be ported (vacuum only as you open the throttle) Check with your finger or a gauge, and use the ported source. I think the motor will run better with the ported source IMHO.

    I don't. I know better.

Ignition Man, will you explain why? I was also of the opinion that theBuick engines idled and ran better with ported spark .

Ported Vs Manifold vacuum.... hook it up one way, then the other, whichever way works best for your car, do it that way....
Some cars from the factory come either way. I had to run manifold vaccum on my buick before to get it to idle good. Now I run ported because I can get it to idle without it....
so there is no "right way" to hook it up, just whatever works best for you!

I agree. Its a free and easy experiment. If I run my Ford 6cyl on manifold, it stumbles when accelerating. Why? The timing actually retards briefly. My 350 Skylark works better ported.

    Ignition Man,
I'm sure you have forgotten more about engines than I'll ever know. I just can't help feeling that your posts sometimes come off as somewhat arrogant. If this is not your intent, I apologize ahead of time. Lots of guys on this BB are very impressed with your work and have said that you are a great guy to talk with, and very knowledgeable on the phone. I have not had the pleasure of talking with you in person, but I definitely will need your services in the future. You can say anything to anyone if you use the right words and a little tact. My personal experiences with ported and full time spark advance have led me to believe that ported works better. This may be incorrect, and I would like to know why. I'm always willing to learn. Again, if I have misinterpreted your intentions, I'm sorry.

I thought the 2bbl only was ported vac from 70-72, and the 4bbl was metered vacuum directly from the carb...... just what I remembered...might be wrong though .:Do No:

How many times do I have to post this information here? Already done it a few times and my fingers are tired of doing so.

    Search for it, please.

I have distributors to build, so I'm going to go do that now.
