Vacuum advance on the distributor. Really needed?

The Rivi's vacuum advance for some reason was blocked off when I bought the car and I've never connected it. The car has the Pertronix ignition installed by the previous owner and I don't know if that has anything to do with why it wasn't used. The car runs fine without it but I'd like to know if I have anything to gain by re-connecting it?

I'm more of an EFI guy so vacuum advances and old school stuff like that are totally foreign to me. Any help is appreciated.

if the vacuum can is still good, hook it up. it will run better, keep cooler and
    get better mpg.

Ditto. The car will love having the additional advance during part-throttle driving.

If I hook it back up, will I need to adjust the mechanical advance at all?

That depends on who might've been messing with things. I suggest putting the timing light on it and start by making sure you're at the original specs. If you want to do more tuning/finesse we can go from there.

You got it. I'll take a look at it probably next weekend when I get the car out again and I'll let you know. Thanks.

I agree with the rest of the guys, that nailhead needs the vac advance. That is where your gas milage is. The main thing is, you dont want too much advance. You need the total advance to be ''reasonable'' for your driving style. ''Reasonable'' is different for the street, than for the drag strip only.
