    Greetings everyone,
How much timing is too much? I got 15* at idle and 35* total, all in by 2000rpm. This is without the vacuum advance hooked up and these settings seem to work best at the drag strip. From what I've read, I have come to belive that the vacuum advance was and can be used to provide better fuel economy and cleaner spark plugs by increaseing the timing further than the mechanical advance when the vacuum is high and the engine is not under a load. With the vacuum hooked up (no load), I get 45* total. Is this too much? I don't notice any ping at part throttle acceleration, but my car is rather loud with 3" exhuast and solid lifters. What do y'all think?

    Steve,
That means you have 10* in the cannister. That's about perfect. An engine can run at 45* at light load. When you stomp it, the vacuum degrees fall off fast, otherwise you would hear it. Sounds like you have it dialed in, leave it alone.

    Hey Steve,

Don't listen to Larry, your car is really screwed up. If I where you I'd sell it quick. Lets see, a purple GSX, streetable, runs 11's and has a 5 speed manual..........OK I'll give you $100 :Brow:

Hope to see you at Norwalk.

Thanks for the response guys. Anyone else care to share an opinion? I'm so confused. $100, Hmmm, Let me see how much I got in it. Hope to be at Norwalk.

I would say that your timing sounds ok. I wouldnt worry about the 45 degrees with full vacuum, there is little danger of pinging with no load.

Larry seems to be an expert on this sort of stuff. I say listen to him. :TU:

DEPENDING ON THE ENGINE COMBO, I have seen 60 degrees possible. 45 degrees is pretty conservative. The more mild an engine is, the more advance it seems to tolerate at part throttle.

The only way you'll know is to play with it.
