Just for those who want to know what all can go wrong when doing business through PayPal. I use it all the time and this was good info.

Paypal seemed to be the best way, especially for us Buick fans outside the US, to pay for spares etc, so:

I opened an account 6 mnts ago and transferred $250.
Due to my address, they than blocked the account.
They also refuse to send the money back to my US account again.
They do not answer E-mails, nor Fax. :blast:

Paypal does suck, at least now. Evilbay screwed it all up.
For a quick fix from someone who has been using it, it works. Outside of that it is a nightmare.
    IMHO

I just did an off ebay transaction with someone and paid with an Instant Transfer from my bank account thinking that the seller would not have to pay any transaction charges because it was "cash" not credit card funded. Wrong. He still got hit with a 2.3% charge. We reversed the transaction and I'll send a MO. I am thinking of closing my account but it can be so easy to pay for things.

I read that..........it's scary.............especially the post by the ex-PP employee. With customer service at an all time low with what seems to be every business you deal with today, this comes as no surprise. I have made only 10 purchases using them so far, but now I'm considering closing my account.

I have been a paypal member for years and have not had a problem yet. I was even a selected member to try out the paypal debt card when it was in the initial trial stages. With paypal they are a company that is out to make money and to provide a service. For me, I hate having to travel to the post office to go get a money order so paypal's service fits me perfectly. When I can't use paypal to pay someone, I'll use bidpay.com which is now under western unions name. As with any product or service, there will always be something wrong with it for some reason by someone. As for that website, I think they can get themselves in some hot water legally.

Wow. My wife has been lecturing me for some time now that it makes her incredibly nervous that I have listed our bank acct number with them to make instant transactions. I think she is probably right. I should probably cancel the damn acct.

What the hell is wrong with a good old fashioned check anyway??

What's wrong with a check?? I don't accept them nor do many others who sell on Ebay. Too many problems w/personal checks and then you have to wait 5-7 days for them to clear.

I hope you realize that checks/cash will soon be a thing of the past. Electronic funds transfer will be the main payment method. As soon as biometrics are perfected, you won't even need a credit card. For example, a retinal scan will be required to pay for items. No need to carry cash, id, credit cards etc.

I agree with you George. My company has a couple of subsidiaries in Europe and we probably write one or two checks a month, at the most. Everything else is done electronically.

Hey, I'm not anti electronic transfer or anything. I love convenience as much as the next guy.

It's just a ton easier now to hack in and steal someones money with all your personal info at the world's fingertips. I can certainly understand how it would make some people nervous. Hell, it happens all the time that people get ripped on the net for thousands of dollars by having their personal information stolen...encrypted or not.

That said, I still think it is very convenient. They have a long way to go though before every desktop PC has a retinal scanning device for online purchases relating to a specific credit card. When they DO come out, they won't be cheap either.

No matter what method is used, people will try to exploit it.

With hackers that can happen today. Remember the problems with computer viruses spreading around the globe. As technology increases, your potential criminal "pool" becomes much smaller since technology requires intelligence. Also, I am sure there are many "hidden" features that are not known by common people on electronic commerce. Encryption is the key and as computers become faster and cheaper to produce, the encryption code becomes exponentially longer and more difficult to break/hack. Look at this way, with biometrics, someone is not going to mug you and steal your eyeball.

But why do you put money on your account?
PayPal is taking the costs off of your creditcard, so my balance is always zero.

And for foreign board members it's the cheapest way to pay.
If we have to buy an international money transfer coupon, we end up with a total of US$ 20.00 extra costs.
And after that we have to face huge shipping costs for bigger parts.

I bought a 1973 Riviera grille at Cars for 175 dollar, after a few weeks I recieved a letter from a company here at Amsterdam Airport:

Your package has arrived, please come to collect it and bring another 450 US$ dollar for shipping and customs taxes.

I told them to keep the grille and put it on the wall, above their coffee machine..............

    Paypal rocks.

    but two rules.

So not sign up with $10,000 limit credit cards or your main savings / checking accounts.

Use a whole different bank all together. You only need $20-50 to ope an account and get a debit/credit card that will let you get a paypal n ebay ID.

Never keep more than $50 on the account.

How can you lose??? You can't.

most of those people were targeted as they used accounts and card with mass amounts of money to steal. No one is gonna commit federal crimes for $50.

I love my paypal card and its %2 cash back. It makes everything on sale including gas. Which why I love my paypal card, no fee's or interest, cash back, I never have to go in to pay and as long as I have $1 on the card I ca fill up with $20. wait 5 days for it to go through then square up my balance then.

    all free with cash back.

That shipping thing is tricky and needs done right or you run into that problem. I sent a guy in canada a part worth $25, customes wanted aother $140 for him to get his part. I re did the paper work and shipping invoice and he got his stuff. The sender must put a real life value on the part. Not a market price. What is a grill worth in raw materials? $5.

I re did mine at $1

I agree with Gumby Paypal rocks !!!!!!!!!

My experiences since its inception have thus far been hassle free. I recently had a deal with a guy on a case of windshield removal knives. (He was selling out of an empty warehouse type guy) and I made a complaint thru paypal and they went after the guy and refunded my money very promptly. I have heard many horror stories but I have not had any personally with over 250 successful transactions. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth. It's like anything else today you have to monitor your activity and take control of your finances like Gumby put it. Good luck out there

If you pay by Paypal off your credit card it's not an "instant" payment. Plus, you can't be a "confirmed" Paypal member unless you register an account number and you become "verified." Verified members pose less of a risk to sellers accepting payment through paypal because there is always a bank account for Paypal to draw from if the buyer should go AWOL. Funds are transferred instantaneously when your a verified confirmed member. Plus, I think it costs the seller more money to accept payment from the credit card as opposed to a bank account.

But your credit card is issued by your bank, and every first week of the month the total for the past month will be written off.

So it's always safe to accept for sellers, just don't put anything in the post until the amount is on your PayPal account.

I believe in America you use credit cards that bill you, and not automatically write the amount off of your bank account ?

By "bank" I mean my bank that I write checks from and have my checking account at.

Not the bank which sponsors the credit card.
