    76-REGAL Refinance, anyone?

    Hello.

Recently, I was with my freind Josh, driving around in his old Buick. As we got to my house, his car ran out of gas. I didn't have any gas in containers at the time, so we borrowed gas from my neighbor. Josh filled his tank just enough to get us to the gas station.
But on our way there the car started to putter really bad, and made wierd noises. When we got to the gas station, Josh turned off the car and it dieseled for about a munute until the car finally stoped. We came to the conclution that my neighbor gave us diesel fuel instead of unleaded. :Dou:

Will this perminately damage the engine? I think he has a 350 in it. What should he do? Any suggestions or comments would help! Thanks

    Brett,
I don't think you put diesel fuel in the car. Gasoline and diesel fuel smell completely different, and I'm sure you would have noticed. What is more likely is you put stale fuel in the car. Gasoline has a shelf life, and it isn't long. The fuel you put in was probably stale, and had lost alot of it's octane rating. Just fill the tank with premium, and it will be OK.

    Thanks Larry,

He said he drove it a while after he filled up and it ran smoother, so the old gas must have just needed to be burned out of the system. It makes much more sense, now that you've clarified it.

So...what would happen if you put diesel in an unleaded only tank?

It would smoke horribly and die....I doubt you would make it to the gas station.

While were on the point of gas, dose it really matter what octain you use in your tank? I was alwayse told to use 91, but sometimes I go cheap and get regular unleaded, and it runs just fine???

Diesel fuel and gasoline when mixed create an extremely explosive mixture. The car would probably detonate all over the place. Wouldn't want to try it.

Using higher octane than you need is a waste of money. If the car runs without ping or detonation on regular gasoline, that is what you should use.

Awsome! I mean, if it wasn't your car that exploded! :stmad:

I had no idea that would be the case! Do you have any specifics or details that make it so explosive? I thought that diesel fuel had a really low octane rating.

...maybe we should try it in a small metalic gas can?!? That would be a fun experiment! :stmad: :stmad:

    Adam,
It's just something I remember reading somewhere. The Oklahoma City bomb was diesel fuel and fertilizer. Another explosive mix! I think mixing diesel and gasoline lowers the flashpint of the resulting mixture. Anyone have further info??:Do No:
