Hello, I once saw a posting that dealt with the how tos associated with keeping your factory gauges and running under dash updated gauges as well. Al of my gauges work in the car, but it scares me not to be sure with a nice set of mechanical Auto Meters under the dash. Can I leave my factory gauges active and run these? Will I need to use the electrical Auto Meter gauges to do both at once ( that may be ok as well). I appreciate the help..
I have auto guages also hooked up. Just to be on the safe side i would disconnect the ones in the cluster. You said they are all working, so you don't want to destroy them inadvertanly. Thanks <img src="http://images.scottfisher.multiply.com/image/16/photos/3/1200x1200/32/GS-1971-Inside-view-Driver-Instruments.jpg?et=6k4KfVD9VS1hDms9XUntCQ&nmid=128721847width="900" align="center">
I run them both. I had to get an elbow that I could tap into for the oil pressure switch line. The temp gauge I used the factoory port on the front passenger side of the intake. I put the factory temp sender in the hole where the vacuum port screwed in and just do not use it anyway. I had to use a connector and extend the factory wire a bit to reach. I got some ral nice auto meter gauges that have red needles and white writing. They match factory gauges perferect. The under dash do not not interfere with the stock at all and they all work. The facory port where the vacuum valve is veryo shallow so I could not fit aftermarket sender there.
>>Hi Dave, I had a question or two as I now have my a-pillar dual pod gauge holder and 2 1/16 Autometer super comp II electric gauges (water temp and oil pressure). I have an elbow now for the oil pressure for the factory rally gauge - did you use a T fitting to attach both oil sending units? Also, do you have a pic of where you rerouted the wires when you removed the vacuum port (with the three port vacuum piece). My '71 350 4bbl has the three port piece with the wires hooked up and I just wasn't sure where to reroute them when I remove it.
Copperhead is right. Do you have a tach in your cluster, or a clock? That thing seems to be very sensitive....
Chris. I used a short adapter out to a tee for my oil pressure sending units. I put the Autometer unit straight out and the factory unit off the 90. Hope that helps.
Thanks for the help and advice. Where would I get the adapter and tee fitting to run both the stock and aftermarket oil pressure gauges? Right now, my car has a funky "L" fitting that the factory sending unit screws into. NOt sure if that is the stock fitting or if the oem sending unit simply used to screw into the block directly. Th vacuum switch port on th eintake should work fine as recmmended and I already have the vac advance direct to the carb. Thanks, Steve
I found mine at Pep boys. But any auto parts store should have them in stock. They're fairly common fittings.
Ive been looking for a oil pressure sender and I may try to do the same thing here so I can have the dash gauge and under dash gauge working together. But I cannot find it anywhere Rock Auto only lists them for a light, and Autozone lists them for aftermarket gauges... any recommendation on either of these? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/accessories/accessoriesShelf.jsp?categoryDisplayName=Performance&fromType=accessories&fromString=search&parentId=cat10034&filterByKeyWord=oil+pressure+sender¤tPage=1&navValue=101439&categoryNValue=100008&fromWhere=&subPartId=prod12406&itemId=prod12406&displayName=Gauge+Sender Also, since the under dash gauge is hooked with that plastic line, I want to replace it with copper. Does the factory gauge hook up the same way? With a copper line? What size? Any help or parts list would be appreciated :beers2:
I have copper line in both the Vacuum and the oil lines to my guages. You can get it @ any Auto parts emporium. Here we have Pep Boys, Auto zone, O' Reileys and Advance. I have not seen them at Napa. It's usually hanging up on those pegboard type shelves. It comes complete with the small swagelock fittings and ferruules. Good choice!
Curtis, the factory gauges are electric; no tubing. I'm not sure if the sending units are readliy available or not. The tubing for mechancal gauges is 1/8". Summit has a copper 6' tube kit here.
the parts place lists it on their website. no idea if it's actually available. http://www.thepartsplaceinc.com/ocatalog/part.asp?VID=0&YearList=0&SearchPart=EL1877S
I order my Autometer electric temp and oil pressure gauge from a guy on ebay and they come complete with wiring and the temperature sending unit and oil sending unit.
Thanks to all. Good discussion and help. Chris, I notice you have an N25 bumper with 2.5 exhaust. Did you purchase new tips or was there another trick to get the factory 2inch tips to be usable?? Thanks, Steve
>>Hi Steve, The N25 tips I have are new repros from The Parts Place and they are the stock size not 2.5. I had my local muffler shop use a reducer on the ends of the tailpipes so the repro N25 tips would fit. Any muffler shop should have a reducer to do this job.
Thanks. I've considered making it true 2.3 all the way out, but the tiips are pricey and my original 2 inch tips are nice. I'm actually running the stock 2 inch tail pipes right now with 2.5 inch all the way to the muffler. Not ideal, but ok. Thanks, Steve
