Um, camshaft sprocket plastic is broken. Repair or replace?

Discussion in ''Da Nailhead' started by BamaWildcat, Oct 16, 2004.

  1. So I am pulling the timing chain off today and go to clean my gears. On the camshaft sprocket, I notice a chunk of tooth missing and a crack. Upon further investigation, I notice it seems to be a ring of plastic teeth molded to a metal base. Does someone puth new plastic teeth on, does someone sell a whole new sproket, or do I need to find another from a different car?

    Thanks,

    Replace.

Those were used OEM to be quieter. Of course once they get old, they fall into little pieces and enjoy a ride through the oil system.

You may as well get a complete new set. Better to catch them just when they're going bad then when there is no more nylon left!

  3. Found just what I needed at Advance Auto. $25.88, 1 year warranty. Whew, I'm glad this wasn't a special part that cost a mint. :beer

    Joe,

You may want to consider a complete change. I'm assuming the gear set in the car is original, thus the chain would be stretched a bit. It's not really any more difficult to replace both gears and the chain compared to just one gear.

  5. I went in to replace the chain, and was greeted by the nylon toothed sprocket, so a complete change was in the works. I think I will stick with my previous crank sprocket because it is in good condition and shows little wear. All the teeth are fine on my nylon set except for just a tip of the end on one and a crack. But I am sticking a new chain and cam sprocket in for sure.
