U-joint(s) needed?

I get a thunk in my driveline when approaching stop signs/traffic lights when the transmission (ST 300) downshifts. This isn't constant though and might be dependent on how quickly I stop.

So, I'm figuring a u-joint or two and I thought I'd drop the entire assembly for rebuilding/balancing. However, when I mentioneded this to a local shop they mentioned that it's generally only the rear joint that goes. Any comments?
