Turn signals keep blowing out

Well, I finally got my 66 GS back together and running. New engine (401), M20 4speed and I had the front clip off. Turn signals worked fine before disassembly. Well, now I blow the flasher fuze (round canister) in the fuze box when the engine is running. Every thing is fine when not running. I have check for shorts from firewall to the lights and appears to be good. 12 Volts at battery when not running. 14+ when running. Car runs fine, but no turn signals or brake lights and the cops may think I need then.

So, is this the voltage regulator? How can I check it for proper operation?

    All and any help appreciated.

    lights, camera, action....

ok, the side markers/tailamps and brake lamps run on the same circuit... with only the parking lamps on, does the fuse blow?? when its on or off??? if the fuse pops when the car is only running, then it sounds like the regulator isnt working. Try this, turn on the headlamps, start the car... does it blow the fuse??? if not yet, rev the car up a little, check to see if the lights get SUPER bright, if they do then the regulator is shot. Or the easier way is to leave all the lights off, start car, put volt meter on battery, rev up car about to 2000, does the voltage spike higher than 14.5?? if so, regulator, if not, let me know.. and we'll keep trying.... Otherwise, sounds like a shorted wire somewhere. You can also put in a "reseting fuse" the ones that the power seats used. It looks like a regular fuse, but has a box instead of a element. This way if the fuse shorts, it resets. Its alot easier than buying a case of fuses. The last thing i could mention, is to remove or unplug all lights at the sockets. turn on the car....(this is if the fuse pops right away when starting) then with all bulbs removed, does the fuse blow?? if not, install a bulb at a time until the one that blows the fuse... blows the fuse. then retrace where that wire is and goes. (side markers front and rear, tailamps, headlamps) good luck!!

Kevin-sorry that you're still having problems, but '62' gave you a very good attack plan. If you need help, I can bring my Fluke (VOM) and beer!

    Still no luck

    Update

I put in a new voltage regulator yesterday and I think I blew that one up too. Was smoking with in a minute!

What a bummer, new engine and can't go anywhere.

Time to pull out the manual and go through everything. :ball:

Did you change the altenator to a newer unit?
