When I engage the right turn signal in my '72 skylark it clicks/engages just fine but doesn't disengage as I straighten the steering wheel coming out of the turn. The left turn signal works fine. It's just the right side. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

I had this problem as well. Turns out one of the turn signal retainer springs(as I call them) had broken.

I used Dorman 49312 & replaced them both. Cheap fix just have to pull steering wheel off. Can rent a puller from AZ for free.

Thanks a lot Kyle! I'll give it a go. I appreciate the part number too!

They sit in the plastic "cam" in the hub of steering column if you will.

Quick fix once the wheel is off. Just match springs up & replace. Others may also chime in if I'm wrong about my diagnoses:).

Let us know how it goes.

I've got everything off under the steering wheel except this last plate which covers all the "guts". I have no clue how to remove this plate. Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

You have to compress the plate(there’s a spring under it), once plate is compressed you have to take the snap ring on the shaft holding it in place off.

Installation is the reverse. Compress plate & spring again & put the snap ring back on in the groove.

Wish I had it..lol. It's a strong spring. If I compress it, how does the ring come off? Just pull sideways? I can get a helper to take some needle-nose pliers and pull the ring if I compress the plate I suppose.

Just expand the snap ring with two fingers using your fingernails while someone holds down the plate. Plate only goes back on one way. Squeeze the snap ring to make the ID slightly smaller, then start it over the shaft. Again, while someone holds down the plate wiggle it in place & let up on the plate.

Ya beat me Tom... Or... Once that plate is compressed, get yerself a little prick (!!) and work that C clip (its really just a spring steel wire clip) up and onto the splines and towards you till its off. If you pull it straight out, itll be sprung and need replacing. ws

If you want to make things easier for yourself, slide the little C clip ring up the splines and slide it right onto the sleeve of the tool. it not only makes it much easier to reinstall, but it keeps the C clip from getting misplaced

Here's my tool for the job. We'll mostly for the installation. Works perfect. I have the Newest GM on for the snap ring if interested. Cheers, Mike

Get the CORRECT tool to do the job if its your first time at it . And I have done literally 1,000 's of these and I have to say there is NO way you can use your fingernails to unseat the snap ring while someone else pushes down on the plate . First your fingernail are not strong enough and how the hell are you going to get your fingers in there with another persons hands in the way pushing the plate down ??? GET THE TOOL and once the plate is compressed use 2 small screwdrivers or picks to unseat the clip . That way you won't have to worry about cleaning up the Blood

Being a GM tech for most of my life and also repairing 1000's of columns , there is no way to remove the ring with your fingernail. I use the lock plate depresser, a small pick, and my pocket screwdriver.

I rarely disagree with Tom T, but I will go with those who say buy the tool. You are asking for a very sore finger or two, and also the possibility of the spring attaining a low Earth orbit without the tool.
