Tubs as repair pieces

I'm looking at some rust repairs in the trunk of the Electra. There are spot where the wheelwells meet the trunkpan which are now windows to the road. What I'm looking at doing is getting a set of trailer fenders or generic wheel tubs and just useing them as the inner wheelwells. My question is.....Can I just cut the stock wheelwells along the center ridge and then butt weld the new piece to that or is something going to prevent that from working? I already know that the backseat and gas tank have to come out to cut and weld without fire, so that's not and issue.

My wheelwells are actually in decent shape. The drivers side had the skirt hanger rip out though and also there wasn't any of the factory sealent on the well to floor seam so the entire weld is long gone. To do it a factory correct way I'd need to replace the lower edge of the wheelwell and the edge of the pan. Seems like alot of work just to get back to normal. I figure tubs will do the same thing plus give me more options later if I decide to get creative with suspension or wheels.
