My '55 Special has a 264 and I used a four barrel manifold and carburetor (WCFB #2197) off of a '55 Century. I'm also running the Pertronix Ignitor ignition. It runs great. Use premium fuel.
Yup, that's the lazy ole John method, and it works great. I always used the stock breaker point distributor, but that was a lot of years ago. Today I would use a breakerless ignition system.
