Trying to tell if this motor has ever been rebuilt......

I am about to put a 2bbl 350 in my skylark to replace the built 464ci that I just took out.

This 350 used to be in my brother's car. We put it in his car in '96 after the original buick 350 in his car spun a rod bearing. The 4 door skylark we took it out of in '96 had 120,710 miles on it. From '96 till '01, my brother put about 20,000 more on it for a total of about 140,000 miles.

The motor has great power, runs extremely smooth and quiet, no valve or lifter noise. It does burn just a bit of oil, mainly at startup.

Today I covered the motor in degreaser, and used the power washer to clean it off. To my suprise, it appears that the motor is NOT painted the original Buick Red, it looks more orange than red. This makes me wonder if the motor has been rebuilt.

Here are 2 pictures of the motor

    Picture 1

    Picture 2

The valve covers look right but the orange is peeking though.

What's the easiest way to find out if this thing has ever been apart without taking it apart?

    Thanks!

Honestly it looks original, and if its quiet, and only smokes on start up, especially with 140,000 plus miles on it, who cares. The red paint will appear orange when its hit with a strong degreaser, red tints are very strong tints, but there not durable at all. If the engine runs good, drop it in and have fun! Mark

Little smoke at start up is most likley leaky valve seals [ most times the exhaust] but is common for a hi mile motor.

    No bid deal really.

Have you seen the price of gas lately?

    464
    -350
    -------
    = $20 less a week in gas.
+ 1-1.5 years of added tire wear.
But still able to produce a grin.

Partly Budgetary reasons, but also my car was no where near ready for racing with the 464. I needed a better suspension setup, a bigger converter, a roll cage, driveshaft loop... the list goes on and on.

The 464 was an absolute blast on the street, but I just couldn't see spending all that $$ for something to just cruise in.

I'm sure with the 4.10 rear axle, the 350 will have no problem burning off the tires, but I'll be limited to doing that in 1st gear only, not 2nd (and sometimes 3rd!)

scott i see your reasoning. because of gas prices i dont get to drive mine often, maybe once a week or so. i have a 4bbl 350 skylark with hopes and dreams of a 455 but it seems like every time i get the courage to spend some scraped up extra cash the dream gets shot down in one way or the other. my 350 will light the tires for quite a distance and has a respectable amount of torque. i think the 350 is widely over looked, or maybe its cause i still have one but i like it! BTW: $2.29 for 91 octane out here, i only put the best! *best as in at the pump, wish i had 110 octane!*

Prices get an higher and we need to have some national strikes.

Companies that profit billions of dollars a year have no excuess for price hiking.

They say it cause of cost they must raise the price but its really cause it would cost them profit, so they raise the prices.

im almost ready to pack my buick in a storage unit and get another motorcycle. i cant afford these prices, buick performance parts are pricey enough alone.

Yea, a small displacement motorcycle at that. My Dads old 86 hondal rebel limited 250 was a nice looking good on gas bike. 2-3 bucks got you around all week.

My 750 Virago isnt as nice on gas. My 2.8 firebird doesn't use much more.

But the Buick has been parked since the pre winter hike and lost insurance along with that.

It needs a new tank anyways.

    darrenkp Love that Torque!

Hot coolant will turn the paint orange as well. The right side of my freshly painted engine is orange now after a heater hose split on me. OPPS!:eek2:

    436'd Skylark Sweet Fancy Moses!!!!!

Alot of machine shops like to stamp engines they built, or machined for warranty, or reference purposes. Look on the starter pad, thats where we stamp blocks at my work. Check for aftermarket freeze plugs, and oil gallery plugs. :Do No:
