I just noticed that there's no "Riviera by Buick" emblem on the trunk lid of the'68 I just got back from the body shop. I checked my other '68 and it's there, on the rear right side. The one I got back from the body shop doesn't have any holes to mount the emblem either, I can see through the access holes on the inner side of the trunk lid. I expected to find welded up holes or bondo, but there's nothing. I'm just curious, since I don't plan to do anything about the discrepancy, but is it possible that maybe other year Rivs didn't use the emblem, or maybe it's a replacement trunk lid that wasn't punched for the emblem. But I'm just wondering why this trunk lid didn't have the Buick emblem.

Thanks for any input or ideas.

Second generation '66/'67s had a script style 'Riviera by Buick' emblem, and the '68/'69s had the block letter style 'Riviera by Buick' emblem in the lower right hand corner, while the '70s had none - so maybe you have a '70 trunk lid Jim ? :Do No:

    I beg to differ.
'70 has the script on the right side also. :Smarty:

OK Dale - thanks for the correction. :beer
I was looking at a rear shot of an original 1 owner '70 in Chris Wolfe's book "Buick Riviera" (p.51) and the script must be missing off the 1 owner '70 in the picture - and there's no holes iether - just like Jim's '68 ? :Do No:
Just shows to go yah, . . . never trust anything you see in print. :Dou:
I had a look at my '70 Riv reference pics on the computer, and indeed you are quite right sir. :Smarty: :TU:

Thanks for the info guys, and now to add some additional mystery: The wife and I were heading to St Louis today to spectate at the NHRA national event at Gateway. On the way, we stopped at Country Classic Cars down near the St Louis area (they've got around 500 collector cars in various states of repair or disrepair). They had a decent supposedly original '69 Riv (priced about $3K above market), and damned if it wasn't missing the emblem on the trunk. Nobody was around to open the trunk for me, so I can't say that it wasn't bondoed up, but there was no evidence that any holes were closed up, at least externally. So I'm not sure what's going on, I'm sort of leaning to replacement trunk lids not coming punched, maybe because they could fit a number of years (66 to 70?) and maybe the posts on the emblems were in different locations depending on year?

I had to look, and I'll be...there is no emblem on that car.
    Strange.

Could be Jim - that would be my best guess too !
I think '66/'67 are same - script + by Buick, '68/'69 are same - block letters + by Buick, and the '70 is script only, for a total of 3 different types of trunk emblems. :Do No:

    Howrad idiot... SAVANT!

Only a handful of 2nd gens are truly "Rivieras by Buick".
If your car doesn't have the emblem, then its just a Buick Riviera.

Damn, see, that always happens to me, I put a bunch of bucks into some damn car and only then find out it's the less desireable version!! But the way I've got this one butchered up it may not make that much difference anyway.

Let me really agitate this situation,,,,, could it be that there was a running change from the emblems that were held on by posts to the glue on ones????? and the glue on ones came off with age.....

Nice try Doc, but they are all post type, and prior to the 'glue-on' type ! :TU:
