    Hi guys,
Recentley I have been trying to address the problem of rust in the trunk of my 67 gs400. So far I plan on fiberglassing a thin layer just to strengthen it since its already been sandblasted. I was wondering if any of you have had similar problems and how youve taken care of it.
-Phill (p.s. I'll put up a pic asap)

Try the POR 15 treatment if it's not rusted through. Used it on the Skylark with good results - looks much better than it did.

Follow directions to the T, no matter what especially the washing away with clean water on prep part.

Still trying to get a pic up (for some reason to get an image on to the forum it needs to be on the web already?)
anyways looks like the POR 15 is the way to go, but will that strengthen the trunk or just paint it? My trunk could use some extra strength. Pic should be up soon.

    Phill,

Here's a thread I did regarding my floor pan using POR15. If you've got holes through it, you will need to do something to reinforce the area.

    http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41604

POR15 isn't simply a paint, it resists further rusting to the area. Just remember, prep work is important prior to laying it down. You'll want to get all the loose rust out of there and treat it with something that will turn the existing rust into a zinc oxide. POR15 also has this too.

Yeah my probelm is the holes, their pretty small, just a bunch of em. I think I will put a thin layer of fiber glass and then POR 15. Thanks for the help.

    Phill,

I used the POR15 trunk kit. It came with some epoxy-like stuff for small holes, and some raw fiberglass matt for bigger holes. They recommended laying down the POR15 paint then putting the trimmed fiberglass matt in the still-wet paint. That stuff dries like concrete!

Also, read up about if you plan to paint over it afterwards - spatter paints won't stick to it without roughing up the dried POR15.

I sprayed the spatter paint while it was tacky. I haven't ran any water over it yet to see how well that worked though.

You have to click the "[browse]" button and find it that way. If you can't for some reason, paintedover.com will host pictures as well.

You can go to http://www.por15.com/ to get more information and order direct.

Locally, I just go about a mile down the road to an autobody paint supply store to pick up smaller, individual cans that I've needed.

As far as the photos go, they have to be under a certain size. You add them using the reply button (instead of the quick reply box at the bottom of the thread), and you select the browse button to find the file to upload from your computer.

Any more problems with it and you can email the photo to me and I'll upload it.

Just did one on a 66 Impala. Small pin holes throughout the majority of the trunk floor. Blasted first. Then treated with rust converter. Fiberglassed with a thin layer and sanded. Primer, then trunk spray made it almost impossible to find, even from the underside.

I know POR15 is like the WWW brand of choice. But there is one called chassie saver that works just as good or better and cost less. They sent me a sample on a card and you can bend n crease the sucker, twist it around and it stays. as good or petter hold than powder coting.

But dam i can't find the URL. Think the company is called magnetic paints..

I think once people find out POR15 will just be poor.

I first started using POR15 about 4 or 5 years ago. At that time, that was all I'd heard of for this purpose. Since I bought the trunk/floor pan kit and had a lot of it left over, I used it on my 72 too.

Is the Chassis Save brand as comprehensive as far as all the different products for different "functions?"

Of course if it's not readily available it may have a hard time making a name for itself. I pay just a little bit more to get POR15 down the street, but it's at my leisure. The convenience along with how good it works keeps me coming back.

I have had very good luck using POR 15 instead of resin with fiberglass matt. I think that POR 15 sticks to metal better than fiberglass resin. I do not like the POR 15 matt that comes in the floor kit. Just get a nice fine woven fiberglass matt and use that.

one last question, The trunk needs some strenght but is not to bad. Do you think the POR15 will be enough or will I need to strenghten it otherways. It only gives a bit when i push medium pressure.
