I'll be watching this one closely, I have a friend who also wants to do this. All I usually see is people saying to wear a crash helmet in case one breaks loose because they are so pre loaded.

Not a 71, but it was pretty simple on my 68. I used a vise grips on the ends to rotate them out of their notches. It's been a while, can't really give any better detail.

Yeah, I would actually take a picture first no? It always helps me to see what stuff is supposed to look like re-installed.

You don't need any tools to do this, and although I think it's going to be a little hard to explain, I'll do my best. With the deck lid removed, lay down in the trunk. Looking up at the rods, with one hand pull down on the rod in the middle while you push back on the end that hooks into the hook on the hinge. By pulling down it basically shortens it up so you can get it out of the hook easier. Once out of the hook just ease it back until the pressure is released. It's not as hard as it sounds but they do have a lot of pressure on them so be careful not to get your fingers pinched. Don't ask how I learned that  Make sure you make note of which notch they are in so you can get them back in the same spot.
