the trunk lock in my '76 Electra 225 won't open with the key.(the round head key opens the doors, glove box and trunk) however it will open with the trunk release. I've tried spraying WD 40 in it, no luck. any idea what else I can do?
it has been like this since I've had it.

luckily I have a shop manual set in case it's an easy fix

If your actual key looks like it is seriously worn, then you might be able to have a new/replacement key cut from the key code unique to your year/model. Of course, the only way to get that info (that I am aware of) is to have the key blanks available, the info written down w/ the original car paperwork or to have a locksmith read the key and try to make a replacement. Since the trunk lock is so rarely used as compared to the door locks, the trunk lock (internal tumblers) may not have been used enough to wear evenly compared to the door lock tumblers. But, you state that the glove box lock (probably the least used lock in the car) works also with the worn key, so this theory may not explain it ...

I don't know if it is possible to exchange the internal lock mechanism between the glove box and the trunk? Maybe a third key on your keychain is in your future ... from a spare trunk lock from a junk yard ...

both of the keys are in very good shape. yes, it works in the doors, and glove box perfectly.
so,I guess I'll look at my shop manual and see if it has any info

if your key works in the other locks you will probly have to take the lock cylinder out and repair it a locksmith could do this. Drill out the rivets holding emblem cover over lock- open trunk you will see the lock cylinder keeper on under side of trunk lid held with rivet, drill rivet out pull keeper out may need elbow bar to get loose remove cyliner for repair.

Does the trunk lock have a small flat metal shaft connecting the trunk lock assembly to the trunk release assembly? If it is broken it will not turn the latch mechanism when you turn the key. The electric trunk release is tied directly to the latch, so it still works. Most auto parts stores have a kit to replace the keys, lock assembly, and flat shaft. If that is the problem, get one and replace just the flat shaft, keeping your existing lock assembly so you can still use the original key. Good luck, Randy

The post by RAMKAT2 is the problem I had with my 72 225, only I didn't have the luxury of an electric release. Had to pull the rear seat. Check the flat piece of steel between the tumbler and the latch mechanism. Bet that's your problem. Good luck

So, are we ever going to find out if you got the trunk open? Or are we just going to be left here in perpetual suspense?

found extra set of keys in glove box, and it did open. so it must have been the way the other set of keys were cut.
anyways, it's now in the hands of it's new owner.
