I am having a hard time getting the Exhaust Manifold to tighten to the exhaust down pipe! It seems like should have some sort of Gasket or a Doughnut between them :Do No: . I have a real bad leak between the Manifold and the first pipe on both sides (dual Exhaust) Any help???

    exaust leak

    hi guy,
there are about 3 or 4 different hook ups on exhaust manifolds. [on all types of cars.] :Smarty:
If the cast iron manifold has a square shoulder on it and the flange on the pipe is kind of bowl shaped then it has to have a "donut" installed in between the two in order to seal properly.
Some exhaust manifolds have the bowl shape cast into the flange surface already.
Some use a exhaust pipe that has a shoulder that fits up inside the manifold.
Now, I am assuming that you have been under the car and looked at the particular system that you have. If there is a donut missing then you should be able to spot that right away.
Is it just one side that is leaking? or both.
    How did it start leaking?
On a nailhead there is a large plug that goes under the intake manifold that can get a hole in it from corrosion or some times come out, and it will give you a exaust leak because the heat riser passages go up thru the intake manifold. :Brow:
If everything is compatible with the exhaust manifold/exhaust pipe combination and there is still a leak at the joint. then the pipes are bent or heat warped. Y- pipes are bad about this. :Brow: You tighten them up snug and then take a torch and heat the pipe up red hot and tighten the flange bolts with the pipe red hot and this should fix the problem. heating the pipes red hot will releive the stresses on the pipe and allow the flanges to pull up tight. :TU:
    hope this helps.
