    Hi guys,

I am having an issue with my rear axle swap. I have a 1970 GS stage 1 car, that I am swaping out the 8.2, with a 1971 8.5. I bought a 3.73 gear, and an Eaton posi, and a friend of mine set it up for me. All good. We swap out the rear ends, and everything is fine. I look at the axles, and see one of the shims on the axle is missing a chunk, so I take it in to have all the bearings and seals on both axles replaced. I now go to put it in, and I have excessive end play. Any ideas? The parts used, are Federal Mogul bearings and seals. Bearing #A-9, and seal #2146. The bearings are the same width, but the seals have a different look. The new ones are rounded, and the o.e. ones are flat, where they meet up with the flange. Could this be where we are losing are total width? Has anyone run into this issue before, is there a prefered vendor for the bearings and seals? Any advice would be appreciated.

    Regards, John.

Sorry guys, I should have looked at this forum more closely. Looks like "The Wizard" has had this issue. I read the post, and think the fix is a different vendor, for the seals. I will contact 'The Wizard". If anyone has any other insight, please feel free to post.

    Regards, John.:spank:

    Thanks guys,

Looks like Federal Mogul has left off the 71, on their #2146 listing. Hence the 714126 part number. That part number is still an active part for them as well. I wonder if they even notice the defective rate on the 2146, or their drop in sales on the 712146?:Dou: The listing is so old, they probably don't even care. Thanks for the help!

I have noticed some shallow and some deep. Best to measure your needs before buyin gyour parts. If your bearing and seal depth is deep use the 712146 if shallow the 2146 will do. I just did 2 71 72 8.5 rears and they were shallow 2146 worked fine. Just one of those things that will cause a headache now and then. Jim

    Thanks Jim,

Mine needs the thicker seal, the bearings are the same width.
