I have a 65 skylark that I am going to be putting a 425 and SP400 in next year. I got the GS specific headers, oil pan/pump and frame mounts, but I was surfing Ebay and came along a specific reproduction transmission crossmember for a 64-72 skylark GS trans crossmember from Tamarazsparts.com. It doesn't make sense that the trans crossmember would fit that wide a variety of years, but thats another thread. Can anyone tell me if I need a GS specific cross member for my planned transplant?

    Thanks for the help

I also need to know the same thing.

I've already installed the engine(401) and trans(SP400) but have not yet secured the crossmember because i need to modify it or replace it with something else. Currently i just have it sitting further back holding up the trans.

The GS cars have a boxed frame, so the crossmember is shorter. Special/Skylark convertibles also use a boxed frame, and use the same crossmember as the GS.
If you swap in a longer ST400 trans, the crossmember must be moved rearward. Should be easy on the open 'Lark frames, but a boxed GS or 'vert frame will need a bracket welded onto the frame.
1967 GS's used the ST400, so those frame mounts are different that the 64-66.
A 4 speed trans uses the stock early mount location...no problem there.

Yep, and Walt is right on..... and you will have to have a 3 flue cross flow, and a 4 row would be better.... fan shroud to match....and the drive shaft will have to be a 1 piece... the factory 2 piece rubber vulcanised ones wont hold up to the torque.... and you will have to change the front yolk on the driveshaft.... the GS used the same air cleaner as the riv did....

Air cleaner,Yep , need either another snorkel added or a bigger one and ''cold air '' from the ww chamber....
Rad, yep, ck it to make sure it is clean and not leaking anywhere....plus a fan shroud.... also get rid of the underhood insulation, all it does is hold in heat and rust the hood out from condensation....
    7 blade fan.....
Dont want that puppy to run hot.....

when i put a st400 in my 66 a grinding disc took car of the cross member.
moved the member back and welded right up. most major cities have a machine shop that does drive shafts, clutches pressure plates and such.

Yep, just pull the drive shaft out and take it and a yolk that fits the trans that you will use to the drive shaft shop and they will cut and fix it to fit your application.... usually cheaper than buying another shaft....
