Trans / torque converter install

    Grrrrr.

My engine is hanging from a cherry picker and the transmission is on a hydraulic lift table.
The torque converter slides onto the splines and slides all the way in until the mounting legs are about 1/4" inside the trans bellhousing.
    It all seems good.
I greased up the inside of the crankshaft and slimed the nose of the TC.
How tight is that supposed to fit in there?

Now getting the engine and transmission both perfectly aligned so those damn dowel pins fall in, not so much.

Any tricks to getting these together or is it just shake jiggle and swear until the magic combination comes up?

    Thanks
    Jon

Hi, the converter isn’t in all the way. There is one more spline to slide it onto. See the measurement below:

Really? Well I'll be damned. I was sure I had that all the way in.
Ok, that will probably make it easier in the morning when I try again.
    Thanks

All good it happens. Try turning it while gently pushing on it and eventually it will click on another notch.

    There are 3 engagements,

    stator splines
    input shaft splines
    front pump drive tangs

There are 2 clicks, sometimes the second one takes time. Get 2 -3" long 3/8" course bolts, cut the heads off and put them in the back of the motor. Slide the trans over them makes alignment easy. Put in the other bolts and remove the long ones.

Yeah, I already have the studs to align. I was certain it dropped in but 1/4 is obviously not far enough.

Try standing the trans on end, if you can.

Yes, the converter hub is not engaging the pump gear lugs.

With the tranny on the table, try pressing and rotating the converter while twisting back and forth on the output shaft, sometimes the converter will turn the pump gear if too much pressure is on it.

(I use the heavy/green Assemblee Goo on the pump gears)

Standing on tail is also a big help, and two hands to lift and hold most of the weight of the converter off the pump gear as you seat it.

Got it! I came in, spun the TC around a time or two and it would not seat. Took it off, swore at it, and slid back on.. clunk.... CLUNK! SCORE!
Now I didn't tighten any bolts when it was jammed in there, just trying to wiggle it together. Sure hope I didn't F up the pump or seal.
Makes me so damn mad that I did exactly what everyone tells me not to do. I was sure that bastard clunked 2x.
    oh well, it's only money.

Anyway, it is attached to the engine and I'm on to plumbing the vacuum and fuel lines.
    Thanks guys.

Unless you turned green and tore off your shirt, you likely hurt nothing but the clock. :)

If the converter is all the way in, you will need to pull it forward maybe
1/4 in to the flex plate after securing the trans case to the engine. If it does
not turn freely before doing this, do not damage the trans by forcing
    things together.

I screw a couple long bolts into the converter tabs, temp handles to allow
moving it into place. I find swearing is never needed. Bruce Roe
