I thought I had a 350 trans from the looks of the pan. Then found I had no modulator so it must be 200. I'm having a problem with it shifting. It won't shift from first at all. It was fine about a week ago. Since then I took all of the emission crap off, the electronic carb (switched to a holley), and switched from an electronically controlled HEI to vacum HEI distributor. This is the first I've driven it since I've done this. The motor runs great now but is no good without the trans shifting. Please help.

Well, I think I know what your problem is. The 200 Trans uses a throttle valve(TV) cable. The cable controls all shifting and downshifting of the trans, as well as line pressure, and shift feel. When you removed the stock carb, you probably didn't realize that you disconnected it also. Do not drive the car anymore until you hook it back up, and get it adjusted correctly. You will toast that transmission very quickly without the cable hooked up and adjusted correctly. You will probably need an adapter to hook onto your present carb for the TV cable.

Everything is hooked up right. Throttle valve cable is hooked up correctly. The stock bracket didn't work correctly with the throttle cable so I fabricated a new bracket. I can tell the trany is starting to toast itself. Usually this is due to pump failure. If I have pump failure than oh well. I'll just have to rebuild. Either way The pump is not my problem either as it shifted great one day and then the next time I took it out it didn't shift at all. The gears would have gradually went out one by one then, so theres another problem. I've only driven it maybe a total of a quarter mile since this problem started happening. I too thought it was the tv cable so I would adjust it just a hair and drive it in front of my house. I'm thinking that maybe the throttle valve in the tranny is stuck open.

Adjustment of that TV cable is critical. If you don't adjust it correctly, you fry the trans.

Yes, but it is not adjusted correctly. The adjustment is critical. If it is off even a small amount, it can wear the trans very quickly. Given the fact that you had to fabricate something to hook it up, I think the odds are that you don't have the adjustment correct. If the transmission was working before, and now it isn't, the cable is the problem. Not trying to rain on your parade or anything :) , but this has come up before on this BB I'm not well versed in the later model transmissions. The stock cables are adjusted with a snap lock. The procedure involves going wide open throttle on the carb, and locking the cable down. It might help to seek some advice from a transmission shop if you can. Tell them what you are doing, and ask their advice. They may help you.

I have a friend who builds my transmission for me but he is in another state. We are talking to try and figure it out through email. The bracket has nothing to do with it. To adjust a tv cable correctly you must bring the throttle to WOT. Then you must bring the tv cable to it's "full pull". Then you must depress the tv cable release button and bring it out to meet the throttle linkage and the release the tv cable release button. Adjustment done. I'm just going to pull the trans and check out the throttle valve inside. This is the only thing besides the tv cable not being hooked up right that could be wrong. I'm thinking it's stuck open. All of the trany shops around here want me to bring the vehicle in which is just not possible.

quick thought. Could the holley carb be the problem. Maybe the distance of throw for the tv cable hook up on the carb is different from the Q-jet. If this is the case then I can fix the problem. I just hope a quarter mile isn't too late.

I just checked the throw and it is different. I don't think that's the problem though. I've installed many transmision. Never had a problem out of any of them. I know how to hook them up. This is my fault however (I think, maybe just partly :Do No: ). On any 700r4 or th350 I've hooked up you just pull out on the cable when your adjusting it. Pull until it stops. Never force it any further!!!! Well I went by the book on this one about 5 minutes ago. I usually never do because I have know too many people to break stuff when they do. I first hooked up the cable after bringing it all the way rearwards. Then I went to WOT and it adjusted itself by coming forward one notch. I thought "what the heck". I pulled the cable off and did a full pull and it only came forward about half the distance of a WOT pull. But the throttle pulled it out farther which would have more than likely broke something. So I continued to pull quite a bit harder and it then stoped for a second time at the WOT area. I've never had one where it was soo hard too pull. Out of the 9 transmissions that I've hooked up I have never come across this. It's like it had 2 stages. I have not driven it yet to see if this has fixed it or not. My fluid was old and discollored when I bought the car but just needed to be changed. The fluid is now a darker. Not as dark as fluid from a completely burnt tranny but dark enough to make me worry. I hope it's not too late. I didn't drive it much with it wrong. I hope I can just change the fluid and filter and be allright. That's if this fixes the shift problem. I'm going to wait and see what my friend says and see what my local trans guy says tommorrow before I do anything.
