Heres a couple of things on my mind. Can you put the gears of a heavy duty th400 from rv's and busses in a switch pitch and keep the functionality of a the with pitch.. Why to frezzer plugs on engines pop out. An engine sitting outside for some time with a popped freezer plug will need to get opened up and cleaned right?
"Freeze plugs" are actually core plugs and are nor were ever to prevent blocks from cracking from freezing. Old shade tree mechanic wife's tale. But they pop out from dry blocks sitting, or over time from corrosion and such. They are an interfence fit, and often dissimilar metal, so expansion and contraction, slowly loosen and migrate. And some you can't remove with dynamite. Any engine if these ages, left sitting will have a lot of scale in the wet areas and should be cleaned to prevent damage to radiator, water pump or cooling problems.
So taking the block to the machine shop would be the best to get those those plugs out? What's a good thing to try before thaking it to a shop?
Correct, when the motor was cast there was a sand filling shaped to the water jackets, once poured they broke the sand apart and took it out of the center through the core plugs. I've seen many boat motor freeze and never pop a plug. Most of the time when the wash a block they remove them for this
How about the th400 question? Thats been on my mind for a while? And can you put cruise control on a th400?
The cruise control options in the mid-60s were transducer in the speedo cable path and vacuum controlled switches as well as the speedometer needle speed set, and brake pedal disconnect switch. I think it might be more trouble to find all the parts and then make them work, but if it is something you want to do, I will be the first to cheer you on! You can use the planetary from 400 to 475 and the other way. But I think Jim Weise can better answer the question of turning a ST400 Switch Pitch into a straight cut gearbox using the 475 parts.
The bigger question is why do you want the straight cut gears. Many a cars run 10s or better and never have issues with the gears
I want to beat on it. If you say the regular th400 will hold and ive read that it will I don't need the strait cut gears but other tell me with high torque engines I should beef up my trans.
I've have been racing my motors for over 20 years in the low 11s, now mid 10s, I've never broke a gear set in a 400. Have broke a few other parts. But my current trans is a rebuild as outlined in my thread, I do have a trans brake set up, but that in my mind is harder on the trans than not. The only aftermarket parts I have is the upgraded intermittent sprag and a bullet forward hub due to the brake.
The only difference between a switch pitch and fixed pitch 400 is the front pump, input shaft, and converter. You could put the straight cut gears in if you wanted to. They might be noisier, not sure.
I know’ shitz fugly and fruity. Boattail Erik made it so as a joke i put it up for a day only. When the sun goes down it’s a gonner: I called you today from a 562 area code, but don’t call it because its my wife’s #. My phone fell in a cooler at work.
Ronnie, Ben has a good thread on mods for the th400 trans in the "juice box" I read it a bunch of times as well as pestered him with a bunch of PM's full of questions during my rebuild a few months ago. Definitely get the 34 element sprag and do his mods and that thing will be a stout tough SOB, throw in one of JW's converters and hold the F on lol. My car moves like a bat outta hell now and launches like a rocket and she's a big ol' heavy Riv.
