Scooped up a TH350 and want it gone over before I swap. Local Tranny Shop wants a grand to do it. Seems high to me given that I can buy one for $1200. Thoughts? Anyone in Mass have a name and number for someone reasonable?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Soft part rebuild is between 850 to a 1000 at a good shop, any upgrades will be higher. Yes you can buy a tranny at 1200 but im sure thats without a torque converter.

    Hopefully that includes R&R.

$1,000 seems pretty high to me.
Maybe for your location it is ok.
My TH400 was done for $500.00 and i supplied the manual valve body.
Extra Red clutches and everything heavy duty.

Ok Bob you got me! What's R&R? If that's remove and replace the answer is no I am dropping it off and picking it up. To have installed later is extra. Also, just rearead previous reply and I actually am not sure if the price included a Torque Converter or not.

    Thanks

Not sure if it's location or rip off...... I am sure the longer the post is up the more will chime in. Also as I add info like not removing and reinstalling for that price and unclear if torque converter was bing supplied by the shop.

    Thanks

Yes i would say that would include removal and reinstalling it....and rebuilding it stock, no upgrades for that price.....performance rebuild i have paid 1500 to 2000 with R&R depending on what i wanted in it.

I had a local speed shop rebuild my TH350. Some minor performance mods and a new converter. I did the R&R. It cost me 850 and took only 9 months.

I have not installed the trans yet as I'm still waiting for my engine.

    I paid $1k for a 350 rebuild in 2006, including R&R. Your mileage may vary. It has been a good tire-chirping transmission (admittedly, behind a 305 SBC).:Brow:

edit to add- it only took 3 days, but had to beat on them about leaning the ladder against the nice grille bar. Almost got into a fight with one of the mechanics, when he leaned into me when I was complaining about that. It turned out OK, though.

The shop that will be doing mine just did a TH400 for Firebird at a friends shop. This shop send this tranny guy a lot of business but he is the best tranny guy around. The shops cost was $980.00 with torque converter. My friend installed it and he stated the owner loves it. Barks the tires in 2nd and 3rd. I plan to have mine there by next week and expect it to be at least a grand or more. This tranny guy is known for excellent work, great customer relations and i know of several trannies that failed beyond the time/mileage warranty and he still rebuilt them for free.

    Also,
When I was looking around I contacted Vince Janis since he is local to me.
He quoted me $800.00 for the same type of build but that was with him providing the new valve body.
Both prices were with me dropping off the trans and picking it up and no converter.

Thanks Brian! Yeah around $1000 isn't unreasonable. I got a name and number for a guy from another member on the site in Mass. Will compare pricing there.

Everything is expensive. To get a good rebuild for $1000 is better than getting a rebuilt unit for about the same. The parts used in a generic rebuild are mostly garbage.
