i have a all stock 71 buick skylark with a 350 2bbl and when i got duals on it i beleive the mechanic said i had a turbo 350 tranny all i know is it's a 3 speed auto.....anyway the car used to shift great when i stomp down on the pedel....now the car will kinda get stuck in that 1st gear after stomping on it and will rev up as high as it can go and wont go into the 2nd gear until i take my foot off the pedel a bit.....now on the freeway when it's in 2nd doing about 50-60 i stomp the petel and it shifts into the 3rd gear perfect with no problem with no hesitation...the fluid is full just had it topped off today...what could cause this?

Make sure the vacuum line that leads from the back of the intake manifold to the vacuum modulator is leak free. It's a metal line with rubber vacuum hose at both ends.

could a bad modulator cause my exhaust to be a blue color upon startup? and is the modulator on the transmission itself?

Sounds like you have a three speed Hydoturbomatic Tranny.
It Sounds like your kickdown cable (passing gear) is working on the highway.

I had a problem where I was stuck in first all time.
Turned out to be a small plastic piece in the transmission worked the governor. All fixed now Kickdown cable changed also.

As for the smoke exhaust= :Do No:

    Keep us posted. Thanks

Its probably a manual. You just need to push the extra brake pedal and move the stick thingy:cool:

well it is a auto trans and does that mean my transmission should get rebuilt or could the transmission modulator thing be the problem??

cray1801 Too much is just right.

The governer weights and springs control shift at WOT. But you implied they have not been tampered with so this is likely not the issue.

On the TH-350 trans., the kick down cable running to the gas pedel from the trans. can also cause shifting issues. There is an adjustmant at the pedel, but you should also check to make sure the cable is in good shape where it goes into the trans. I had a cable once that would slip inside the formed end that goes into the trans. A problem here will effect your trans. kick-down function. Make sure the cable and formed end are secure and inserted the proper distance into the transmission. Both the cable inside the end and the end itself must be secure and not slip in relation to each other during operation.

The downshift cable could be sticking, or the vac line to the modulator has a leak.
If the diaphram in the modulator goes bad, the engine can suck trans fluid through the vac line, but when that happens, you usually get blue smoke all the time.

well the blue smoke is only upon startup after about 2-5 minutes it goes away

There are a few things that can cause this. You don't want to rebuild the trans before you check the simple things, right? Have you checked the modulator line for restrictions or leaks? Have you checked the modulator? Do you know how to check it?

i seen the line going down to the tranny from the intake manifold but didn't see exacty where the line went into the tranny i was going to put my car on ramps tomorow so i can get under it and see whats going on

The line goes from the rear of the intake manifold down to the vacuum modulator. The line is metal with rubber hose at each end (manifold, modulator) Make sure there are no vacuum leaks at either end, and that the line is not bent or crimped along it's length. The vacuum modulator will be at the passenger side rear of the transmission. It is held into the transmission with a clamp secured by a single 1/2" bolt. If you remove the modulator, you will lose some fluid, so be prepared for that with a drain pan. If you point the vacuum connection of the modulator down, and any ATF drips out, replace the modulator. If you have a vacuum pump, you can test the modulator to see if it holds vacuum.

1BadWagon i got too many parts.....

try manually shifting the tranny into second when the tranny in first. start off in D and if it doesnt shift into second when it should then shift it into first and quickly into second. dont let off the gas. if it upshifts into second then it has something to do with the modulator, could be leaking vacuum or just bad. :beer
