first off i dont know much about trans. I have a leak somewhere in my tranny. its been driven for a while like that but just today it got worse. while on the freeway it was draining(spraying) on my exhaust. thats how i noticed. i cleaned what i could but i cant see where it is starting from. my whole trans is covered in crap. heres my beginner question... theres a plate or shield of some sort it looks like wrapped around the bottom of the front of the tranny( between the trans pan and the engine pan.. what is that for? is it suppose to hold fluid? is it a cover for the torque converter or something? well i found a finger size dent in it with a small hole like a rock tore it or something. fluid is slowly leaking from that hole. but is that the SOURCE of the leak or is it not ment to be in that pan in the first place.?? please help!! by the way its a 2speed auto 68. :Do No:

  2. the metal part with the hole in the bottom is the torque converter shield. sounds like you lost a front seal. replacing it involves pulling the transmission, removing the torque converter and replacing the seal. Bob

You need to thoroughly clean the bottom of the transmission first, before you can find the leak. Put the car up on jackstands or ramps, then spray it down with engine cleaner. Hose it off, let it dry, then look for your leak. At that point it should be easy to see (if it's actually spraying) The converter inspection cover has a hole at the bottom as you describe. That is normal, the cover does not hold fluid. You can remove it, and run the motor like that. Be careful of the spinning ring gear/flexplate. The leak could be the front seal, or cooling line. You'll have to figure out which. The front seal is a common leak point. The torque converter has to be removed to replace it. Don't ASSUME that is your leak point without doing the above. You know what they say about the word ass-u-me

There are several places a trans can leak. As stated, you need to clean everything off and see. From what you described, it sounds like you may have a cooling line leak. These steel lines are located on the passenger side of the trans and run to the radiator. A small rust hole is all it takes as they hold a lot of pressure. When they leak, they make a big mess and usually spray on the exhaust.
Other culprits are the pan gasket, front seal (as mentioned), speedo gear seals and even the servo cover (2 speed trans).

    Hope this helps,
    Mark

    thanks for your help :beer
im going to spray it down today and try to figure out where its comming from. i noticed after wiping most off, i drove around the block (no more than 25mph) to see any new wet spots, some was running down the back section of the pan and bolts. i couldnt tell if it was comming from a higher point further forward or comming from the pan gasket. even driving that slow could it make its way back there from the front seal?? it seems to be more concentrated to the drivers side. i mean it made it all the way back to my mufflers! but MORE seems to b on the drivers side.
