im planning on rebuilding my 340 on a 67 lesabre 4door. what trannys should i be looking at? Not really trying to get great gas mileage but maybe something will a little more pick up and lower rpms while driving long distances.

as of right now its stock but im not positive which trans is in there right now, ive heard a few different names, hydromatic, dynaflow :Do No:

In 67 it should be a st 300 2sp or a 400 3sp if you already have a 3sp tranny you can change your rear gears for more power but you will loose mpg or you can go with a 200r4 or 700r4 and have the best of both worlds more gear and better mpg Good Luck

i believe its a 2 sp. it shift around 20-25 mph and then no further. whats the main difference between the 200r4 and the 700r4? and will they fit right into the 340?

If you have a SP300(two speed switch pitch) the simplest upgrade is to a TH350. I believe they swap in without even a change in driveshaft.

This will give you a second gear where the SP300 is really a 1st and 3rd.

The 200R4 will require electrical work. The 700R4 is a Chevy bolt pattern and will require electrical work, adapter and different drive shaft.

so the th350 it is. so there are 3 gears? including an overdrive? i know the switch pitch "unit" was removed some time back because it broke. How can i re install it, is it necessary to have? what exactly does it do?

this tranny stuff is really interesting to me. THanks so far!!

dont know the gear ratios in the 300 but the third gear in the 350s is 1:1. if the 2nd gear in the 300 is the same then your mileage would probibly be about the same with a 350.

the 350s dont have an overdrive. alot of people think they do because the early 80s and up versions had a lovk up torque converter and it felt like a 4th gear and people thought it was overdrive kicking in.... if you went with a lock up style trans then you will probibly see an improvement in mpg because the tc naturally slips around 10% on non lockup trans. so if you got rid of the slippage then you have better mpg... there would be some wires to run though for the lockup style and the non lockup and lockup style use a cable for the kick down so you will need to figure out how to mount it to the carb....

both the 350 and 300 are 1-1 in top gear so your mpg wont change. With the 350 you will have a 1st gear and more bottom end power. The 350 is a direct intall and the cheepest swap, you could probably have it done for around $600.00 at a tranny shop. The 200r4 is also the same size and you wont need driveshaft work but it is expensive around $2000.00 at a shop but you will have a lower 1st gear and overdrive giving you better mpg. The 700r4 Is longer so drive shaft work plus an adoptor plate will be needed but the 700 has even a lower 1st gear and a higher overdrive ratio. One problem you have with the 350 is your kickdown. the 300 kickdown works of a switch on the back of the throttle linkage the 350 uses a cable connected to your gas pedal. I never installed a kickdown when i swapped out my 300 and down shift manually which i rarly have to do since i have 355 gears.

    Hi,
I plan on changing my 67 LeSabre's to a 2004 r out of a 88 or 89 Caddilac, I don,t think I need to beef it up if I'm just using it for crusing, I have one that works well and am just going to use it the way it is. I might have to move the tranny cross member back and change the driveshaft length:Do No: plus hook up the TV cable and vacuum lock up switch.

not much really to do a 200-4r and with a small block it would live behind one pretty much stock basically a tv cable and a lockup control which is a 75-140 part depending on what brand you buy

so im beginning to get ready for my rebuild. Im looking into TH350.

what mods am i going to need to do to get it working right? How does/ and what does the kick down switch do for these trannys?

can i make my current trans opperate like a th350? i think its a 2 speed.

the th350 uses a kickdown cable and not a switch like the st300 you most likely have. the kick down cable controlls downshifts when you hammer on the the gas pedal. if you dont have the cable hooked up or adjusted right the trans wont downshift when you floor it and the engine will bog down till the car picks up some speed. get in touch with GSDrew and see if he can send you some pics of how he got his cable to mount on his 340.

its easy to tell if its a 2 speed. if it only shifts once while driving then its a 2 speed and the gear selector will read PRNDL.:beers2:

can i make my current trans into a th350 by swaping gears and hooking back up my switch?
