    Just got a '70 THM-400 tranny.

    ------------------
    B 70C 345 C

    70-BC-106958
    ------------------

    I understand the B means Buick, C means trans type, the 345 is a date code, and the 106958 is serial portion of the VIN.

    I'm know it's out of a big car but maybe not originally, any way to tell anything else about it?

    Any other identifying codes/numbers to look for? On the long tail shaft there is the letter B.

    How do I decode the date? The VIN portion does not match up with the VIN of the car it came from.

    ThanX
    Frank

    What is the partial VIN on the driver's side near where the pan mates.

    What am I looking for?

    A stamped plate or numbers stamped on the tranny?

    Will check after work....

    I understood to say that it was non matching. Did you look for the engaved numbers on the driver's side right above where the pan attaches. These are on the main case and not the tailshaft.

    I'm a noob.. :Dou:

    Iwas looking at these numbers 70-BC-106958 Thinking the 106958 on the plate was part of the VIN. That is why I was thinking not numbers matching, my bad. :spank:

    I will check for engraved numbers tonight.. :TU:

    I suspected that and I suspect it is the correct trans. It will start with something like 0HXXXXXXXXX the Xs will be a series of digits that match the tail of you VIN.

    OK here is what I found stamped 40Y148251. Yes the 6 digits coresponds to the VIN of the car.

    But I am trying to find out what the tag means?

    ------------------
    B 70C 345 C

    70-BC-106958
    ------------------

    I understand the B means Buick, C means trans type, the 345 is a date code. Can any one tell me how to decipher the date code?
    Do the numbers 106958 have a meaning?

    Answer
    4 = Buick
    0 = 1970 model year
    Y = Wilmington Delaware Plant

    B 70C 345 C

    70-BC-106958

    Answer: If it is a date code the Julian date code method would yield the 345 th day of the year. For the 70 model year it would be the 345th day of 1969. This is December 11, 1969.

    Do the numbers 106958 have a meaning?

    Answer:If they have meaning except for internal plant reasons like ID for warranty recalls I am unaware of it.

    I think the 345 is one of those indecipherable procuction codes, like on the block. I don't think it is an actual date code

    I suspect you are correct about that.

    thepartsman Back Ordered Again ?

    BC = Mfg Code for model usage
    Model usage = TH400 with 455-4, Std. Equipment on Electra,
    optional on the 5000 and 6000 series.
    70 C 345:
    70 = Year
    C = Engine or Vehicle usage
    345 = Production Date
    This is the info that was used for warranty and/or parts replacement.

    70 BC 106958 = Year, Usage and Transmission Production number.

    Frank,
    If you want to know the date when the transmission case was cast you can buy one of my "Date Code" books and decode it.

    Great info.. So would that be 345th day as mentioned Dec.11, 1970? or 1969?
    Hmmmm... This was pulled from a 4dr Wildcat.

    If it were a date code, and I do not think it is, the year would be 1969. If the date were December 11, 1970 that would be for a 71 model year car.

    The number 345 has nothing to do with the 345th day of the year.
