total timing

    Maybe, but the other way around seems to be true as well, cause-and-effect-wise: If your engine is running too hot, that can result in pinging (or worse).

    The 67 Riviera timing specs were dwell at 30 / initial at 2 1/2 BTDC. 68-69 was the same except initial at 0 TDC. Was this because of emissions and fuel economy only? Or because of a different amount of advance in the distributor?

    Yes, emissions. The initial timing matched the amount of mechanical advance in the factory distributor. 30-34* at wide open throttle for best power. Vacuum advance was for fuel economy.

    Okay. I run mine dwell at 30 / initial at 2 BTDC. Feels good.

    OK, as long as you have the original factory distributor, that's fine.

    Today i fueled up a bit of gas (Shell). Got 30.84 liter which makes for €70.28 if you ever wonder paying too much in the U.S....lol
