I have searched to no avail...and am kind of aggrivated. I bought a 1964 buick Wildcat with (assuming as it's what he told me) a 425 nailhead. I really want to know what I have, I cant get to the engine casting number as its grime covered and...well...I just couldnt find it. the valve covers are horizontal with 2 bolts. the intake has a number : 1365781(couldn't find it on any lists) the heads are cast with: 1196914, the exhaust has rust but best I could tell this is the number from hte right: r-1361860 and left: 1348347-3 the firewall had the numbers: x 4459545 stamped directly into it...not on any tag or anything. the car is a 2 door hardtop with the 2 speed tranny. it has the starter on driver and oil filter on passenger....I know its a nail head but is it a 425???
Look right behind the thermostat housing, and just ahead of the valley pan cover,,, on that flange the engine code is stamped along with the serial number of the car that the engine came with.. if they match the number on the car, then you have a ''numbers matching car''.....and the engine code is different for different years... once you have the code stamped on the flange, you can determine what year and cubes it is....
The cylinder head # you listed is for a '60 401. If code in the location on the block that Doc pointed out starts with a 4G, 6G, 7G, or 8G the engine is a '60 401. Steve weim55 Colorado
Get some cleaner, simple green or engine degreaser and a small wire brush. You will get to the codes!
Look where doc said....in 64 Wildcat the 401 is stamped KT and the 425 with single 4 is stamped KW. John
