So my question is, what's the secret of putting the torque converter on the transmission input shaft? How many clunks do you hear when installing? 2 or 3? any recommendations on install? Oh, motor is a 72-76 455 block and tranny is TH400 from a GTO (drive train is definitely not numbers matching, makes for a fun restoration on finding parts). Thanks! History: I pulled my engine and tranny all at once about 3 years ago. I unbolted the trans and removed it from the motor. The torque converted stayed bolted to the flywhell. My understanding is that to put them back together is that I need to remove the torque converter and install it on the transmission first. Well, this weekend I unbolted the torque converter from the flywheel.
TCI says that there should be a full 1 3/16" between the edge of the bellhousing and the torque converter bolts
You can spin it till the cows come home and it won't drop, you have to wiggle and work with it to get it to drop in
It's 3 if you count the converter hub to the pump drive. See those two notches? If you line those notches up with the pump drive tangs, then it is 2 more engagements, one for the stator splines, one for the input splines. Turn, push, wiggle until it drops down all the way. Like John said, it should be 1 3/16" behind the bell housing mating surface.
Let it dry for a few days or you may as well submit a DNA sample to the FBI...Youll do yer share of muscling it. ws
Ha, yeah thought about adding weight and making it lopsided. The old blue paint was falling off and had some surface rust. Figured drain it out, clean it up and refill it back up before putting it on the tranny.
