To heat or not to heat. That is the question.

    Hi guys.

After trial fitment, I realize that I need to dimple my header tubes slightly so as to clear the frame crossmember. They don't need to too much massaging. I plan to use a large socket and BFH to make the dimples. I have never done this before. Is it necessary to apply heat? It seems to me that if it can be accomplished without, it would be better for the integrity of the steel by not risking localized weakness from the torch. What say you?

    No, don't bother with heat.

They did that on Bitchin' rides last night. They heated it red, laid a larger hammer on the heated metal and hit it with a smaller hammer to dimple it. I would think heat reduces the chance if cracking it.

Mine needed more clearance than I first though, started without and it was much easier and took less effort after heating.

Big issue is now it's really hot and you cant test fit it till it cools enough to handle

Hmm. Ok, I guess I will try without first and then use heat- if needed. Will propane get it hot enough? That's all I have.

Nope. I wouldn't waste your fuel, needs to get good and red. I bet if you have it marked where you need the clearance the local exhaust shop can heat them up for you for a very minimal charge

If you heat the spot that you need to dimple, it will probably look much better than taking a hammer to a cold tube. You'll be able to clearance it with fewer hits resulting in a smoother dimple.

Thanks fellas. I ended up using heat. My neighbor has acetylene. I tried doing them cold first, but I would still be trying to get the dimples deep and smooth enough.....
