Hi everyone first post, I want a 10 bolt 8.5 with posi traction for my 1964 Special. The thing is that I have not found in the junkyard any GM vehicle with the shock brackets at the rear of the diff. Any suggestions? Here is a picture with measures of my current rear end.

The other option is to build the puny 8.2. Thanks!

I would bet monzaz can enlighten you on what is possible and affordable. He's helped many a soul here and I've bought a whole rear from him, rotor to rotor.

With that out of the way, I suspect there are no 8.5" 10 bolts in the exact measurements for a 64. Any 8.5 with the proper brackets is probably going to be an inch wider per side. If you can handle that, an 8.5 10 bolt should be easily procured and swapped

A lot of folks run the 8.2 posi and beef it up by adding stronger axles plus a T/A girdle cover.
You would be surprised what they can handle plus you already have the housing....

Google 8.2 rearend and horsepower and you will see alot of info/conversations regarding this..

Just a thought if your not running on the strip with slicks and pushing over 450 hp to the rear wheels.

No 10 bolt 8.5 that narrow. 1971 was the first year for 8.5 in a A-body GM Buick and Olds. Jim

knucklebusted, 72buicklt1 and monzaz thanks for the quick reply and info. So if I do not mind going 2'' wider (I can always compensate with offset wheels, right?), what cars are the most common donors for this swap? I found an 86 Bonneville with with the same shock mount locations. It will work?

No, only 71-72 Skylark/Cutlass for the housing that will bolt-in.
'73 -up will have different width and mount locations.
Later 8.5 inch internals can be used in 71-72 housing, with some exceptions.
