What is the best way to go about this. I've got the krylon engine paint already but what is the best way to prep it. I'm pulling the intake and the valve covers are already pulled and the are going to be bead blasted
I would use the DH 1608. It is tough to do while in the car.. Getting the surface prepped is the key. Use Preps All etc.
Jim is right! for the amount of time it takes to mask everything you could remove to engine and do a better job. I bet you will still get red paint overspray on lots of stuff anyway.
If you ARE going to try and paint it in the car, here are a few tips 1) Prep - BEFORE you pull the intake/valve covers, Spray a good dosing of Simple Green on every surface you can and use cheap-o tooth brushes to give it a good scrub. Rinse well with water and repeat ... and repeat 2) Masking - use Aluminum foil to wrap/cover anything you dont want painted. Alum. foil works well because you can kinda mold it around whatever is needed and it stays there and holds its shape 3) Painting - Use a couple of window/box fans infront and on the sides of the car to draw the air down and out as you paint. use short 2-3 second shots instead of lonnnng shots to reduce airborn excess that WILL stick to anything it can. 4) Wear - Rubber gloves, Sealed Eye protection (like an old pool mask) and wear a GOOD breathing mask
Just take it out, for the amount of time it;ll take. It will take you longer to mask it off than it will just to yank it and start preping it. You'll be much happier wit the results,. What did it cost you to get the intake and valve covers blasted, just curious.
You can paint the engine IN the car---you need to mask and do it inside. I did mine over a weekend---probably took 4-5 hours total---here is how it came out. Pete
