I have been reading the threads on ignition timing but there is one thing I cannot figure out. Where are the ref. marks on the 350? I admit this is the first time I'm adjusting timing on any car I've ever owned, but I have found my TDC mark on the balancer but I cannot find the reference marks anywhere. So I have absolutly no idea what my car is set at.

If anyone has picture or could explain it in very plain english (I am still a novice at working on my buick) I would be very thankfull!

    James,
The timing tab with degree markings should be part of the timing cover. It is not uncommon for it to be obscured by dirt or grease. It should be on the drivers side very close to the edge of the balancer. It should have markings for 0, 4, 8, and possibly 12*. Some of the newer covers had bolt on timing tabs, and it is possible it is not there. Take another look after cleaning the area.

    Larry,

Thanks for the response. I'll attack it tommorow afternoon with some degreaser. If it is not there, how would you suggest I time this motor?

    Lars,

That white thing above the balancer, is that the timing marker?

Yes! the stock mark, (it was 4* off on my balancer!)
You can see a "notch" that locks like it's been made by a wide hacksaw.
it's not it's factory made, the white paint is to make it more visible!
With a timing light, at idle, no vacuum advance connected and hose plugged, that mark is supposed to line up 10-12*
if you do it "by the bock"

Practice on this (basic ignition timing setting) and read the entire thread i linked to above. (there is much more to read if you type "ping" or "vacuum" in the search function on this board)
Then you can decide if you want to recurve the distributor, manifold vacuum and so on.
It involves a little work and a lot of testing to get it right!
If you don't know the sound from a engine that ping/detonate, don't do this your self.
pinging will ruin the engine! :Smarty:
