Has anyone here used timing tape on their engines? I'm assuming it goes around the balancer and can hopefully be used for setting up valve lash / roller rocker arm adjustment (my main concern) as well as fine tuning timing (not so important for now)? Please fill me in or explain procedure for using timing tape.

Make sure the damper is very clean.
    Find True Top Dead Center.
Place the tape zero point on True Top Dead Center.
Wrap the tape the rest of the way round the damper - make sure it's oriented in the right direction.

Before you buy the tape - unless it's labeled for Buicks - measure the damper diameter.
If the tapes are un-labeled, just make sure to get one for the correct diameter.
The Summit catalog should have what you want.

Fwiw - my damper is powder coated.
Even though I cleaned it well - specially the 2nd time around - I lost two tapes.

Gave up and marked the damper at 32 degrees BTDC.
I did determine the True Top Dead Center pointe prior to.

Our balancers are 6 3/4" diameter, I believe. You can use Mr. Gasket part # 1588, Jegs part # 720-1588, 6.99. It's really close, within a degree for our Buicks
