hi, i'am changing the timing chain on a 1970 buick skylark. when the two timing marks on the sprockets are lined up, does that put the #1 cylinder on tdc? do you use gasket sealer on cork gaskets? thanks.
Yes, TDC, but it may not be TDC compression. When you drop the distributor in, verify you are on the compression stroke by bumping the engine over until you get compression in the #1 spark plug hole. I like to use Edelbrock Gasgacinch on cork gaskets. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/...MIy4CijajU6AIVw5-zCh2JmgIlEAQYASABEgIP8_D_BwE
As you line up timing marks, lower points up upper points down. You really should be on compression then. Fill oil pump while timing cover is off, save you from issue of not priming later.
hi larry, so, it could be either. I've watched some videoes on changing the tc and they say the first you do is rotate the old timing chain so that both marks line up.then install the new one.they don't say anything about where the #1 piston should be? I assumed it was on tdc on the compression stroke. is there anything I should look out for, doing this job?
The #1 cylinder is at TDC twice, once on compression, once on exhaust. Been awhile since I did a timing chain. Just check before you put the distributor in. Just squirt some oil into the pump from the back side of the timing cover.
From the backside. Should be rope. Grab it with needle nose pliers . It should pull out. The tap out metal retainer if your going with a neoprene/rubber seal
Pete, not that we mind one bit answering your questions cause this site is the best Buick board hands down, but you will definitely want to buy one of these. Best money you will spend for your car. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Origi...769757?hash=item28689c5d1d:g:wfEAAOSwk6dbqONc https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=1970+buick+chassis+manual&_sacat=0
actually I have the manual. nowhere in the manual does it tell how to remove seal! the seal is rubber with a steel band around it. its pressed in from the back of the cover. you can't bang it out because the front lip on the cover is blocking all access to the seal.
Somebody replaced it then. The stock seal is a rope seal. You'll need to pry it out from the back. Can you collapse it with a small screwdriver and mallet? Page 60-69 of the 70 manual, paragraph C tells you how to remove the stock seal. Won't do you any good though.
yes, I think your right. it was changed. i'am afraid I'm going to scrape up the seal seat if I start prying on it. geez, didn't need this. yes, I see it now. 60-69 for rope seal.
your right. it wasn't leaking. but, being the jerk I am I f up the timing cover. so, I guess a new one is in order. dam! hey guys, thanks for your help.
Stock engine and steel gears? Just a chain. Your not having much luck so go with the theory if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
