hi all, installed new timing chain, now leaking oil from pump? would it be alright to use two gaskets and black ultra sealant? where can I get a good replica timing cover?

Unless you disturbed the pump gasket, it is WAY more likely that your leak is coming from the bottom of the timing cover where it meets the oil pan, OR, the front seal. No, it is not OK to use 2 gaskets and especially not RTV. You'll change the clearances inside the pump and lower your oil pressure. TA Performance has good covers.

its actually coming from the oil pump, I can see it. the timing cover is back on the engine. I packet the oil pump full of Vaseline. is it possible that it affected the gasket seal?

You shouldn't use any sealer. It can change the clearance inside the pump. Just the gasket. If it is leaking, maybe the surfaces weren't clean or sometimes it leaks from the bolts because they are slightly narrowed (worn).

I used thread sealer on the bolts. (Great Blue). the oil pump surfaces were scuffed in some places. I used jb weld to even them off and sanded the jb weld smooth. I mean the oil is pouring out.

Was the pump cover surface this clean & flat? It has to be for sealing.
You can slide oil pump cover around with 400 grit, then 600 on a piece of glass or granite till it's smooth....

no,but I thought after the jb weld treatment it was ok. is there more than one gasket for the pump?

    Yes.
Use the thinnest gasket that will still allow the pump gears to turn without resistance or rubbing. Probably abt .002-.004 thick.
Clean surfaces as if it was new.:)

is it possible I used the wrong gasket? iused part #fp70032.

Wouldn't cause the leaking like a sieve.

????? the thought of redoing the job is somewhat daunting.

You probably don't need to remove timing cover, just oil pump cover, if that's where it's leaking from.
You need to razor blade or hand wire brush those cover sealing surfaces. Possibly draw file timing cover lightly after cleaned, with a fine mill bastard file.
Clean and wet sand pump cover with 400 then 600 grit on flat glass or granite
surface. You won't need heavy sealer. Maybe a quick lite spray of high tack or similar on the gasket.
You can redo the vasiline pack job so the pump will prime.

Clean, flat surfaces are what you want.:)

ok, thanks. is it possible to prime the pump by taking out the oil sender and spraying oil in it?spraying oil into the oil sender hole?

Yes, if you turn the pump backwards through the timing case cover with the distributor out. Use heavier oil like 20/50 for the priming.

do you mean turn the oil pump ccw?

I have primed a pump that way. As Larry said - don't use any sealant on the gasket surface. Can you post some pictures of what you have going on? It's best to set up the pump with the cover removed so you can get a feel for the pump turning it by hand. Also, what did you put JBweld on?

He's saying turn the pump CCW very slowly while putting oil into the pressure sender hole to make sure the cavity is filled with oil. Turn it by hand - not with a drill. It should only require a few revolutions.

You DO know the oil pump cover bolts are different lengths yes?
If its leaking like a sieve it sounds like you may have some longer bolts in shorter holes, OR EVEN WORSE, you didn't properly check gear end clearance and the gears were still above the gasket surface even WITH a gasket, the still protruding gears keep the filter adapter from seating/sealing properly, the pump gears will still turn, albeit somewhat hard if its not bound up, but it will chew into the cover, while it leaks profusely:(
Remover the filter adapter and see if your ok, post pics too.
