HI Guy's, My 1964 Rivie,425-4bbl, died while on a cruise a while back. I'm finally trying to fix it. I thought it had jumped time, so I am down to the timing gears & chain. The engine only has a few thousand miles since a rebuild, eveything is clean, steel gears, timing marks line up. So this was not the problem. However the chain has more slop than I expected, about 3/4" side to side between the gears in the middle. I just called Kanter to buy a chain & they said I should also replace the gears. I don't want to waste money, but I don't want to be foolish either. I am replacing My harmonic balancer also. Advice? Where is a good source for the engine Paint, in a spray can. When its running well on one carb I will convert to two Edelbrocks. Where can I get intake manifold gaskets, a progressive linkage, & an awesome oval type air cleaner (with Raised Ribs, preffered). Thanks--- I love this Board.
Roger, Give Carmen Faso in NY, a call.....he's a nailhead specialist who's been recommended by many on this board. He'll provide you with lots of advice, and the best parts available. Carmen Faso N. Tonawanda, N.Y. Phone: (716) 693-4090 The harmonic balancer is matched to the engine....change it, and you'll change the engine balance as well..... Oval air cleaner lids can be found at most vintage Ford parts suppliers, or do a search for 'cobra air cleaners' on ebay. Carb spacing is different, so just cut your own bottom piece from 1/8" aluminum....
timing chain, etc Thanks Walt, I found the Engine Enamel locally at Advance Auto Parts. It is Dupli-Color #DE1618, Detriot Diesel Alpine Green. Surely some of you Guys know how much "slop" is too much for a Nailhead timing chain. I understand that Mr. Faso is a First Class Nailheader, I don't like to take up professional's time with what should be simple questions. Does anyone know right off what the Carb spacing is on the Factory Dual Quad manifold? Still would like to know about the progressive linkage. Roger.
You can get a very nice oval air cleaner from Mooneyes. about 185 comes witha K&N cleaner, it is made by Offenhauser BTW, make sure you torque the bakancer on to 20 ft lbs, sounds like a lot, but, I bought a ric and the guy that replace his, didnt bolt it on right, needless to say, the balancer was trashed, as was th crank asd wsa the timing cain cover, beware ! Good luck finding those parts ! Good luck Tom
Balancer Thanks Tom, Some one told Me the balancer was mated (balanced with) each engine. Mine is bad,the outer ring has moved, I can't use the timing mark to set my Ignition, plus if it slips off, no telling what it will destroy. What is a Nailheader to do? BTW didn't you mean 200 ft/lbs?
Check out Cramen Fazo. 716-693-4090 The manis a wealth f knowledge, and he is honest and wont try and rip you off ! I just bought some hard to find parts fom him and he didn't screw me like someone in Arizona :-( !!
