i have a 350 and i am looking for a whole new timing case and oil pump,i am low on money so i will have to find a used one from the junk yard, what cars should i look at and how do i know if one is good? Should i change the gears right when i get it or should i see how it runs before i take it apart? It seem like i am having more problems since my rebuild than before?

If you cant afford a new one, you can try getting one off of a 3.8 V-6 REAR WHEEL DRIVE up to 1983 or'4 Maybe someone on the board here knows when Buick went fron the 14 bolt V-6 pan to the 20 bolt. You need one off of the 14 bolt pan car. These were found in Regals, Olds Cutlass's, and MAYBE some Pontiac Grand Prix's, I cant quite remember.
Be VERY carefull when removing the cover bolts, they love to hide behind 20 years of oil leaks, I know I've cracked a few covers myself by missing the one just above the oil pump housing thats sorta recessed in there.
The only drawback is after all that labor of removing a used one, you might end up with the same thing you already have:(

i definately feel ya, but once i get the case off what are some things to look for to let me know what shape the cover is in? I will spend a whole day taking them off to find a good one if that is what it takes, I just wanna make sure that i get a good one.

What's your name? You can put in your signature. This is a very important part of your engine, you want to look in the pocket where the oil pump gears go.It is very crucial to the overall well being of the engine. You want to see nice clean surfaces with no gouging or signs of irregular wear.to be absolutely sure, you should have new oil pump gears with you and put them in and measure the side clearence between the gears and the housing your looking for .004 clearance if you have more than .008 look for another cover.
Now,you also have to check the end clearance,[between the bottom of the gears and the oil pump cover.]which is a little more complicated but can be achieved easier once you understand that there are fix-its for it ,like a new spacer plate and ,gasket thicknesses TA sells all of these.
I suggest you look into it further and get all the info you need,Join the BPG,research all your needs on this board and get informed before you rush into something you're not quite sure of.
This is a very important part of your engine and there are a few more tips on this particular part of the whole combination.

what kind of problems you having

you could get one from a v6 but you would have to use a v6 oil filter or use your filetr housing, did you drill out passage to sump in block ?have a booster plate or extended gears?bigger sump, got the right pressure spring?there are 2 sizes from what i know, i have drill out some of the passages in my housings for more flow and my engine has seen 6000 rpms a few times and its still together, new gears and booster plate should be good as long as bearings are in good shape. like red says ta performance can answer most of you questions. good luck andy:rolleyes:

The oil pump is the same for the v6 and 350. The filter "housing" is the same. The only difference is the outside diameter and depth of the filter used. The PF47 and the PF24 have the same gasket size and same threads. I have a V6 cover on mine, and it works great, plus it gives you the better seal in front instead of the old rope type seal. You will have to make your own distributor hold down though. A large washer and new bolt....thats it.

    cover

i used the stock holddown from the v6 and my filter housing said metric so i figured they where diferent since the grand nat guys run the long filters(pr51 i think) rather than a pf 24 but you are right about the rope seal thanks andy:eek2:
