I just got done installing a rebuilt Buick 215 in my TR8 and have a question about timing. The book calls for 7 deg. BTDC in its stock configuration. However, the engine now has a mild cam, different carb, headers, and no air pump. I started out with the stock timing and it ran decently, but backfired like crazy. Since then I've experimented with different timings, both advanced and retarded and each produced a noticeable change in performance and driveability. I guess I could just use this poke and hope method of finding the best timing, but I'm thinking there must be another method of zeroing in that is a little more "scientific" and less seat of the pants. Anybody got any clues?o No:
Try tuning your total advance. Never mind the initial timing. Most Buick engines like 30-34* total (without vacuum advance) Make a 30* mark on your balancer if you don't have a dial back timing light.
