The tilt steering on my 71 Riv is giving me trouble. It won't stay on its notch if I pull down on the wheel. So when I floor it the steering wheel wants to fall down a notch. Or if I try to steer it without the engine on it will move all over when I pull on it. It looks like there are some plastic parts inside. Has anyone ever replaced these? Is their an easy way to just lock it in the position I like?

See my tilt wobble article on the site below.......your tilt collar screws are loose causing your problem.

    George,

My 70 GS with a tilt column is locked in one position. Would this be the same kind of problem with the tilt column screws?

Your column is locked due to galling of the pivot pins which prevents the upper collar from pivoting/rotating on the pivot pins.....use the special tool I have pictured in the article to remove the pins.....they will probably need to be replaced.....I have extras.....just add a little grease when you install them and you will be set.

Thanks Parts Hawk. Thats a great write up. Somehow I think it will take me more than an hour to do that. It will take at least 30 mins to find an E8 torx bit. :)
