Tilt Column, Repair Parts, and service I have just purchased a 1970 floor shift tilt Column. Before cleaning inside, lubing moving parts and repainting it I Checked the opperation of tilt, Ignition switch and wheel lock. The steering wheel lock pin was not working. I then removed the column top housing and found a {spring} steel wire which is mounted on the left housing by a philips screw and hooks up to the column lock pin. Turns out this spring is broken. Where can I find this one small part ? I can post some pic's if it would help. Also I checked a non tilt column and their NOT the same.
Non-tilt columns are completely different. I can get the correct "pop-up" spring for you. Email me direct with your shipping address. GStage1@buickperformance.com
Year One shows exploded view of both column types in the interior section of their catalog. Good reference.
Well, a simple wheel lock repair and pop up spring replacment has turned into a disassembly for cleaning, Painting, and lubrication. After I got into the column to repair and replace missing parts. I saw that it needed cleaning, Paint, some minor rust removel and lubrication. So here is what I ended up doing.I know this is the best thing to do. And yes I think I can get it back together. Today I started cleaning the shift shaft and have some pics for those of you who have never done this. Look at all the parts... Notice that the wheel lock pin spring is broke and the pop up spring assembly is missing.
GM will have that spring. They also have upper and lower bearings, repair kits and if you need it a sphere assy. Might as well change whatever you have to now. If you local parts guy is less than friendly let me know and i can look up some p/n's for you.
