    I have a bent inner tie-rod on the left side. When i look up part number son the net, all i find is inner left or outer right. Even NAPA is having trouble finding the right part. Are the inner and outer the same on the left and right sides? Same question applies for thidler arm.

    Thanks.

    Why are there only 2 part #s for the ends if there are 4 of them?

    It's obvious the "L" and "R" in the part# means right or left, but what does the "H" stand for?

    so does that mean that the inner and outer on the left are the same, but different from the inner and outer on the right?

    H= hand

    I see nothing in the books to indicate that the inner and outter per side are different.

    My mechanic called me back. It isn't the idler arm, but the pitman arm that needs to be changed. He says he can't find any parts though. Can someone give me the part# for the pitman arm and where i can buy it?

    Thanks.

    I've even looked on ebay and can't find a pitman arm. Anyone know if i can use one from another model?

    another question: is it difficult to change the ball joints?

    I called rareparts.com, the lady there was very helpful. The reason pitman arms are not readily available is because they are considered non-wear parts. Unless it's completeley broken or bent, (which is very difficult/ unlikely) they should never need to be replaced. she said it looks like it's moving because the tierod is messed up. I'm going to replace the tie rod and see how it is. if it's still loose, i'll check the idler arm and if i still have problems after that, then i'll consider the pitman arm.

    I did find one place in the States (i'm in Canada) that sells pitman arms for $150US for my model. ooch!

    70 Pittman = GM #7805971 w/o PS and #7805973 with PS.

    If the idler arm has flex in the elbow replace it. To check for the flex remove the hook up and try to move it at the elbow.

    clear this up

    the part numbers ending in L or R mean left or right hand threads.so you have a right thread tie rod ,a sleeeve and a left thread tie rod on each side.This way when the sleeve is turned ,you are turning both tie rods in or out at the same time.As for the pitman arm ,correct it is a non wear part . The joint is in the center link .this joint goes thru the hole in the pitman arm. The tie rod ends on 71 and 72 are beefer .So if you change all 4 tie rod ends and the 2 sleeves on 68-70 to the later style /you just beefed up the front end at no extra cost. IF you shop at a parts store that can't tell you this simple info .it is time to look else where. I just told you this info without looking in a computer or book! TRY finding a PARTS PLUS AUTO STORE . locally owned and operated . I'm a proud owner of a real auto parts store . ST.CLAIR AUTO SUPPLY . STCLAIR PA. PARTS PLUS more than just parts .alot of knowledge too.
