i am taking my 98 gs to the local dealer for diagnosis . i believe that the climate control head is fried again . had one replaced under warranty in 2001 . this is a known problem & a tsb was issued for it . however , since it is not a safety issue , there is no recall . the climate control is very sensitive to voltage fluctuations or surges or the disconnect-reconnecting of the battery cables , which i have not done since the unit was replaced the first time .
one day the a/c worked great , the next day only heat . all the fuses & replays are fine . when the unit failed the first time , it was in the middle of january and the a/c worked , but no heat !
i think the head is over $650 cdn + labour + diagnosis .
my 90 bonne sse had climate control like the buick but it never failed in 8 years of ownership !
pi??es me off !! such poor quality engineering !

I'd side-step the dealership service and march it right up the corporate service ladder - your car has a know history for this part being defective and you shouldn't have to pay for their screw-ups

Is the display fading or is the entire unit shot?

This is a problem common to the 97.5 - 99 Gs's. I believe they can be easily fixed with a simple soldering iron. More info can be found here:

    update

turned out the problem was the electronic clutch on the a/c pump . at the same time they replaced a seal on that pump and did a recharge .
    total cost $731 cdn !!!
    a/c works now .
