It's really not worth dealing with this stuff anymore.

Yeah it's my fault your home state charges sales tax which started 10/1/2019.

I guess I need to be versed in all states tax laws or rules.

All I know is that of 1/1/2020 I will likely not be selling on Ebay anymore. My home state will be also on the tax list on Ebay.....

Cash or Money Order for 2020 for me.

What's next, tax man showing up at the swap meet looking for his cut?
    Extortion I tell ya...
If we go back to the barter system , they would tax ya a goat on a 4 goat deal....Jim

There are still good buyers out there.....then there are the others.

I don't control the system.... I just list stuff and technology takes it over.

People are uptight and I guess some don't look at the invoice that's system generated.......not by me but by ebay.

But the guy that's just trying to sell his extra parts gets punished and had to diffuse the situation.

    It's ridiculous...

I hate to tell you this but that started at the Fall Charlotte Event in the late 80's/early 90's.

We were forced to either "open a store" in N. Carolina and charge sales tax for every item that we sold to that state, regardless of whether it was mail order or not, or not sell any parts at the event. The state had an entire army of tax people there and approached every vender that was selling new products. (They left the regular guys selling used parts alone.) The company I worked for, at the time, decided to not sell any parts, and just hand out cards. I had barely enough money in my pocket to get home, as did many other venders.

After that, other states did the same thing. If you ever wondered why some venders set up their stands and only gave out cards, well now you know.

And at least one candidate for president wants to tax wealth (all of your possessions) even if you didn’t sell any of it. ‘Add up everything you own and send in 2% of the total’.

Happened at the GSCA Nationals a few years ago, another reason the swap meet has deteriorated lately.

I didn't get the Bowling Green Welcome from her. She usually hits the swap meet area, but doesn't walk thru the pits. Guess I should set up in the pits. No $25 fee to the Nats either.

...makes sense in state with no personal income tax, gotta get revenue somewhere. In OP's case, don't know how much transaction added to purchase, but sounds like buyer was looking for excuse to back out, or worse, to time complaint after item mailed...

There is a news story about the State of California sending an Amazon Retailer in Philly a $1.6M bill for unpaid sales tax ...

California's Franchise Tax Board is very aggressive ... it came after me after I moved to another state. It claimed I owed CA vehicle registration fees even though I had moved my cars with me to my new residence in a different state. There are going to be many battles and bills to come following the US Supreme Court's decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair.

Most of the rest of the 49 states have or are in the process of passing statutes to deal with collecting the "remote Seller transaction sales tax" and the reporting and payment requirements.

Cash sales are best and always have been. Even on Ebay Market Place if you mark an item sold it gives you multiple choice on who you sold it to or if you didn't sell it.

I'm sure they are collecting info for many things.... Ratio of sales on their website and for the tax man.

After Dec 31 .......cash or money order........

Used to have a booth at the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami boat shows. The stuff we sold started at $60K +++ and weighed 1500# plus. we were only there to rep the manufacturer, not to sell. The tax people were always on us and hanging around. I just figured it was Florida.
Worst was doing a show in Seattle. We always gave away free beer to valued clients an prospects. The convention center people came down to arrest us. Only the convention center could sell beer, nobody could give it away !

I sold $1500 worth of specialty parts and accessories on ebay recently that I otherwise would NEVER have sold. For instance, who knows what a tuner or a monode for a Chattanooga Diathermy unit is? Not many I would guess.

My stuff sells but sometimes a rough sell.......... Someone with false expectations of just an a$$ in real life.

In the last 3-4 years I've sold allot of stuff.

Some odd stuff sells I guess...... 1 person that needs it is all any seller needs. I list my stuff buy it now so that's all I ever need is just 1 person.

Well, Brian. I bought that NOS auto console chrome top plate from you a few years back off eBay. It's still in it's box and shines like a mirror. Thank you for that.
