This dial up thing is soooo slow, and unreliable..........I had to get my line repaired for static again, third time in 6 months. I used this board last night with a 9.6 KBS connection speed!:af:

I use Buffnet for my service provider, their tech support is second to none, and if I get a cable modem from Adelphia I will have to give that up. Whenever you call the cable company for help it's "press1, press3, etc." you know the drill.

How good is DSL service anyway? :Do No:

I would suggest going with Adelphia, I have had there cable modem service for about 5 years now and completly love it no problems, I used to have dsl and it was much slower. I don't need adelphia tech support so i guess i am not much help in that area. Good luck on whatever you choose

    DSL

DSL is a pain to set up. Cable is very easy and very reliable. Go with the cable! You won't need tech support! Install a wireless router off the modem and you can add 5-6 computers!

I switched to dsl about 6 months ago...... should have done it sooner. I e mail architectural drawings in my business which use to take 20 min before, now it does it in about 30 sec.... I use my telephone co for the dsl hook-up, cheaper than the cable, and no problems.....

Verizon DSL has been excellent so far. Cheaper than the cable hogs, too.

I'm on DSL with no problems. In fact, many of the people I know have recently switched from cable to DSL recently. The way it was explained to me was cable is like a hose with many holes punched in... the more people using the same service at once, the slower it gets. I've noticed this when using cable hook ups around or just after the dinner hour. DSL is constant speed.

Setting up the cable modem in our house = really easy.

Setting up dsl at my grandmothers house = Pain in the arse.

If you can go to cable, I recommend it.

I also recommend going cable. Yes, its true that the more people on it, the slower it can get, but I think that unless you live in a really dense area, that won't be a problem. I've been hooked up w/Earthlink via TimeWarner now for about 8-9 months now and I think it only has gone down once. When I had DSL for a year in college, it went down a number of times. Look around for deals, too like at BestBuy. I hooked up through them and got first 6 months of service for $30/month, $42 after and a $75 BestBuy gift card. I thought that was a pretty good deal.

Good point Zach - Cable companies frequently run specials with free modems etc. Best Buy et al has specials too, check around!

I had DSL with AT&T and the setup was an awful pain. I do server support for a living and knew more than the guy at the other end of the line when I called tech support when I had problems. More on my AWFUL experiences with AT&T here:

I switched to Southwestern Bell and love it. They got me hooked up a week ahead of their promised delivery date. The setup was so easy I could have talked my mom through it, and that's saying a lot. You just pop in the disc, it talks you through the cabling, and then it goes out and finds your modem and talks you through the registration. I wish everything I do at work was that painless. Only had two connection problems with it EVER, and those were both problems with the ancient box I was connecting with, not with SWBell at all.

My advice would be to go with cable if you already have cable TV because it will probably cost you less. I went with DSL because I don't have Cable TV and didn't need another monthly bill.
