Any Steely Dan fans in here (besides me)? I've been a listening for decades. They have a new album "Everything Must Go" due June 10, but the songs can be heard now on their website www.steelydan.com. It's hard to imagine them topping themselves, considering their past recordings, but this one is an instant classic! Oh, my JBLs will sure be in heaven on Tuesday!!! Oh yeah, and I've got tickets for 30 rows from center stage for the concert at the Gorge in Washington too! I'm such a happy camper!
I'm a big fan of Steely Dan! Though I must admit I seldom listen to any recorded music anymore. Now I'm gonna have to dig out one of their cd's to pop into the cd player on my way to work this morning! It's been a very long time since I've followed what they've been doing, didn't realize they were performing live these days. When did they start? For some reason, seems to me they used to be strictly a studio band.
Brent- I have to agree that Steely Dan has made some fantastic music over the years. Aja was practically an anthem for me during high school years! I've been grooving on the Two Against Nature album this past week, coincidentally. It is very good musically. Lots of jazz influence that adds some welcome complexity on tracks such as Jack of Speed. And the lyrics to some of their songs are funny at times, like Cousin Dupree: "She said maybe its the skeevy look in your eyes Or that your mind has turned to applesauce The dreary architecture of your soul I said - but what is it exactly turns you off?" Anyway, thanks for the link. I had no idea they had another album in the works. I was figuring on another ten year wait...
Oh, just remembered! I always liked the lyrics from "I got the news" "You In your Lark You're a mark You're a screamer You know How to hustle" I always assumed that meant a Buick Skylark! :Brow:
Yeppers! Steely Dan has been performing live in the past few years, got to see them at a small venue in Atlanta GA. couple years ago, simply great. Looking forward to seeing them again here in Ohio in August. Bruce
Aja is the album that I've listened to the most--kind of my anthemn when living in Las Vegas. The very first CD I bought is The Nighfly (Donald Fagen). I'm gonna have to get a surround system soon though as some of their old albums are getting remixed into 7-channel DVDs. They toured the first couple of albums in the early 1970s, but quickly decided recording was more their thing--several amazing albums resulted, including Aja. They more-or-less took the 1980's off, but started touring in the 1990s and have released two albums this decade. Their lyrics are definitely intriguing. Here's a sample from the new album: "The boardwalk with lovers The house on fire" It's only within the text of the song (Green Book - about a stalker/psycho-killer) that it grabs you. I also like Godwhacker (off the new album). From what I can gather, it's kinda like some superhero in chase of terrorists.
