The one that got away

Ever had a car get away due to financial issues or lack of know-how?

In 96 I sold a red on red 326 powered 65 tempest convertible for 900 bucks because the guy that rebuilt my engine jacked a bearing or something and it quit running after 3 months.

Other than that the interior was perfect but the frame rails were rusted to snot. I swear I'll always regret not keeping that car a few more years until I had enough knowledge or money to fix it right but..I was a mere 19 years old and needed the money for bills. :spank:

    Ah well..

    Sure have!

    How about:
67 GTX didn't want to change the heater core
    69 Dart GTS/383 spun bearing
69 Road Runner engine lost in fire while out of car
    67 Barracuda/360 engine wouldn't run under 190 degrees
71 Duster traded down for a 69 Barracuda

See there are two patterns here, Mopars and lazy guy. There were other issues with these cars but these were the ones that broke the camels back. Course getting rid of cars means they may get redone right the worst thing to do is put it out back under a tree and tell respective buyers you want a jillion bucks, or the famous I'm going to restore it someday/never.

If I'm remembering correctly, I think my dad might have had one of the ultimate ones of those:

1957 Corvette - base model 6-cyl engine, special order with every delete option selected

It was the cheapest corvette you could possibly buy, and they didn't build many at all like that. He sold it to pay for Grad school.

72 GS 455 convertible. Passed because I could not afford it at the time ($3000.00) and needed lots of work, quarters, etc, was missing hood, etc.

I know where it is and has a great home but always regretted not buying that one.....

That wouldn't happen to be the red one a couple of blocks from me would it? If it is I would agree it has a great home.

I don't personally have any, but my mom does. I really don't know why she did this.
First car: Used 68 Camaro SS with 396
Traded it in on a new mid 70's Nova
Then ontop of that traded that car in for a late 70's maybe early 80's Jeep Renegade CJ7. Cool Jeep, just I wouldn't have traded the Camaro to begin with. But what can I say. It wasn't mine to begin with. But she can still scratch 2nd like any guy I have seen in a car and still loves to play around when driving next to me. I have seen her burn out a few times. It's great to have a mom that is still young at heart.

  9. Wanted to buy a 72 Challenger in about 1979. Very nice shape, kind of a gold/bronze paint. Buckets, A/T. 318 I think. Problem was, it was $700 more than the 73 Nova SS 350 that became my first car instead. :Dou:  At least the Nova was a stick. :3gears:

Yep.....The year was 1985 and I was stationed in San Antonio, Texas...Fort Sam Houston. Found a 1970 Stage 1, 4spd, convertible parked at a large hotel on the north side of San Antonio. Just outside of the 410 loop. It was dark blue with white top and interior. It was an employees car. Told me he wanted to sell it because the gas milage was so bad and the convertible wasn't what he thought it would be. To noisy. I tell him I want it for the 2500.00 he wanted but I needed a couple weeks to get the money. The car was totaled 10 days later. I'll never forget how close I was to owning "The Car".

Mine - '67 SS396 Chevelle. Restored it from the ground up in the '80's, beautiful car. Moved to Atl and had no where to store it so it sat outside. Drug it around with me to about 4 different apartments in six years (blew the motor and the rear end at some point). Finally fixed it in '92 then sold it in '93 when I bought my house. I didn't have the time or the money for it and the paint was getting bad from sitting ouside so I know it was the right thing to do but I still wish I could have kept it. I sold it for 5500.00 and I cringe when I think of how much I could get for it today! Oh well, at least I didn't sell it to the guy that wanted to back half it!

P.S. I may have sold the Shovel but I kept the Buick!

Mine was a 67 Camaro. My dad owned a 68 and because the job my dad was doing during the 70's he was unable to repair the car that my mom so gracefully forgot a thing called OIL. so the motor went south. it was a 327 4sd car. so my dad sold it because he did not have the time to repair it and it became a dirt track racer... Fast foward. I find a 67 in the paper no motor no trans. I think perfect I will buy a crate motor and tranny and it would be functional. I call the guy tell him I am on my way and that it would be two hours till I get there. I get there and some dude was pulling off with my dads camaro. It pissed me off... fast foward 30 minutes... I look in the paper and see a 72 Skylark Custom... This is the reason I am now a buick enthusiast....

I have 2. Both cars I owned. A 70 stg1 with leather interior and 70 gs 455 convert. I was a way at basic training, when my younger bother cleaned out the garage. Sold everthing (including the orginal # mathching motor and trans to my 71 GS455.) for 10 bucks in 83.

Yup, may be, guy by the name of John owns it now. I looked at it in 1989...I was 21, in school and couldn't afford to buy it. It was sold to someone else and John bought it off him apparently, then did a great resto on it.

I keep threatening to fly out there one weekend and go for a ride...

    OK
1 we sold a 72 Chevy Cheyenne supper w/402 cause mom wanted it out of the driveway.

2 Dad traded his 55 Cameo w/283 three speed for the driveway (this was just before they started to get real expensive)

    the worst is:

1964 Impala SS 4-speed w/power windows. Dad needed two things Garage space and Mother off his back. Car was rough and he bought it and stored it. sold for $2000 about three years ago. This is the killer part. Come to find out it was originally a 409/425 horse car w/2-4s and a M-22 (the tranny was still there! and it was worth more than he sold the car for!)

    Yup... I was 15...

A used car lot not far from my folks house had a 1969 GTO with a 4 speed, for $900..

My dad would not let me buy it..

Two weeks later, I found my 68 GS 400 sitting behind an apartment building, two doors down from my Grandfather's house..

And the rest, as they say, is history..

I could have been a Pontiac guy... oh.. the horror..

most of my regrets have come from not having the resources to finish a project. i get to the point where i just feel disgusted with myself and end up selling off the car, bike, or other project under the reasoning that it is going to a better home:ball: the 67 special i just sold last year is one of those. need some metal transplanting i couldnt afford to pay someone else to do for me and i coudnt do out on the street in front of my house. before that was a 66 impala that needed paint, same reason. before that was a 74 honda CB750 i had restored but had no place to keep it. not a day goes by i dont at least once say to myself "if i only had a garage". this is my work space now guys...
